I am concerned for Sharon…they (the man) probably didn’t even give her a new car. Probably a ‘98 Cadillac. How’s she supposed to pay for the gas?
Thats a hella big TV for someone on government assistance. She probably paid for it with the cash she makes (undisclosed of course…) babysitting kids in her ward. Either that or by pawning off gov’ment cheez.

Our soldiers risk their lives to defend our freedom beyond our shores and yet our government lets special interest groups create this type of destruction of the American Society from the inside.
When are the majority of us going to wake up and end this nonsense. My mother raised 3 children for over 12 years without the help or assistance that was due her from my father. The courts failed her and she had to work 3 jobs to make ends meet. All becuase she was a proud American and obviously because she was a proud white woman who was raised to know that you have to work to live. Thank God she taught me that becuase I too work 70 hours a week just to break even and I don’t have a big screen TV.
Wake up America!! Turn this country back into what our ancestors made it to be. Not a 3rd world welfare state full of dishonest, lazy and whinny people who belive that they are owed a free ride by birth right. Hell, we need all natural born citizens to work so the politicians can give it all away to other countries that hate us. What type of world do you want to leave your children?
I am concerned for Sharon too. Its a shame how greedy and ignorant she is. If she feels she could do better living across the street in a tent whats holding her back. I think Sharon needs to be stripped of everything the government has given and give to someone who does NEED and will APPRECIATE it. Dr. Martin Luther King didn’t fight for us black people to sit on our behind and collect what she thinks is owed to us. Yes, Sharon I am black and 28 and WORK for everything we have. Facts: Sharon Jasper is a racist. Two points I was trying to make: 1) Point out her racism 2) The abuse of the welfare system which is color blind. She did say “shut up White boy” in a city council meeting. Imagine the outcry if it had been reversed and the White man said “Shut up, Black women.”
She has been on welfare her entire life. Section 8 housing was designed to be short term to help people get back on their feet so they could become a functional cog in the society machine–not a permanent living arrangement. The system has been abused by people like Sharon Jasper, people who are black, white, yellow or whatever color their skin may be.
If you believe this is racist, then you are probably a racist. Sharon Jasper could have been of any race or skin color: white, red, yellow, brown, or green. It is irrelevant. The situation is what it is and she just happens to be a Black women abusing it in this instance. The only reason I know of her plight or anyone else is because she invited the media into her house and life and became a public figure to garner sympathy and it backfired.
For the record, there have been, literally, hundreds of comments of a racist nature that I did not publish because this is not about race and racism in any form is offensive.

You know, this is typical and that is the truth. I see this all of the time. I am a white man, late 30’s and I have gone to work without fail since I was 16. I enjoy the fact that I have to work to reap the benefits. My wife and I work everyday and we wonder sometimes, where we will get enough money to pay for the extras or just make the high electric bill? It gives us something to look forward to. I will say this, there are people out there that are born with a silver spoon in their mouths and they are fortunate enough not to have to worry, then there are others out there that don’t have to worry because the idiots in the government sector continue to give, give, give, then there are the rest of us who make it from paycheck to paycheck and are happy when the bills or paid (by us) and have american pride because we work hard for what we get . By the way I pay for you to enjoy your free housing and I have to understand that your babies daddy, sells drugs to buy all of extra things that you are able to enjoy. Listen, don’t bitch, just keep on raking it in and taking advantage of it. To sum it up, your are a sorry individual, get a job and set an example. Hopefully one of these days there won’t be “NO MONEY” for your sorry ass!!!!!
This is the way it is here in Texas where I live. They spend their dope money or government check on big screen tvs and then gripe while living rent free in a brand new housing complex. They(H.U.D. recipients-section

I feel sorry for those who continue to truly suffer from the ravages of Katrina, but I wonder how many more “Sharons” there might be, living off the largesse of the community.

If you accept government money for food and housing the only thing you should be allowed to say is “THANKYOU”. In Ohio we have something called Workfare. Some people still work the system, but not like they used to. If you receive government benefits you pick up trash along the highways, clean bathrooms at the county home and other public service jobs so the state budget doesn’t have to cover it or you go to school and get a high school diploma so you CAN get a job. You can still get benefits if you are part of the “working poor” (of which there are far too many in our country), but getting help when you need it is not the same as playing the system. All states should adopt this ASAP! And while we’re at it, lets stop giving social security disability to drug addicts. Give them the chance to clean up and if they don’t, they’re cut off. This is one of my other pet peeves.

I was in New Orleans when they were sparring over the destruction of some of the “substandard” projects and this very picture was in the Times Picayune paper – I noticed the big screen and kept the paper to show my friends back in DFW. Unbelievable, just unbelievable. Deport the illegals, stop all forms of welfare and assistance and let them take the jobs or starve.

Althought this article is a little exagerated, the fact remains that there are people in this country who feel they don’t have to do anything to support themselves because our “elected” officials put these laws and programs into place to make it very easy for people to do nothing. I, as a taxpayer, am fed up with our government’s way of doing things. But, until these people are taken out of office and replaced with people who will actually change policies, there is nothing anyone can do about it but gripe! Same goes for illegal immigration. They may as well turn the country over! The same will happen when given amnesty. They will have governmnent housing and welfare, if they don’t have it already, and work straight cash jobs to have the new cars and furnish their govt housing with top of the line furniture and them and their children will wear top of the line clothing! I would like to know what other country in the world takes better care of people who will not work and make and effort, take better care of people who are in this country illegally than the care they give to hard working true Americans who earn everything they have! I used to work as a house painter in Colorado, my small company got the contract to paint homes like this (HUD & other subsidized housing) while this was not the norm, there were MANY able bodies sitting around starting “Miller Time” at 8AM on the porch watching me work…many newr Cadilacs, that I had to monuver my crusty old work truck around in the parking lots. But then my next door nieghbor was trailer park white trash that couldn’t hold a job because he was too drunk & his wife was busy popping out kids on welfare dime…time to end the madness
Make welfare 9 months max then give them jobs in the county/state sector build housing for the homeless or other tasks they are capable of…sort of a rekindeling of the TVA project?

I have seen and heard a lot in my life but nothing like this. Can it really be true, large TV and wine cellar in Section 8 housing?? If true, this poor soul and a great number of others like her all over the United States are shining examples of decades of the ultra liberal Democrat Party. For some reason these people feel ashamed of what they have worked for. Years of governmental give-a-ways, while they might make the liberal legislator feel good about themselves, have helped destroy this country by creating decades of family dependency on liberal government. The main reason is buying votes which equates to power and control over more and more people. There is a sickness in the ultra liberal mind set.
All people need help from time to time but to cause great numbers of families to live for generations off government subsidys is detrimental to America. I think it goes like this: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him to fish and you feed him for a life time.

This country, which I love and would die fighting for, is going in a very “bad” direction right now and has been for some time. Things such as pride, responsibility, dignity, respect, honor and accountability (the very things that made our country the greatest country in the history of mankind) are unfortunately, no longer the “norm”. They have all but disappeared from the mainstream and were replaced with “It’s someone else’s fault”, frivolous law-suits, disrespect, unaccountability and entitlement. I feel as though my tax dollars are given to anyone who does not want to help themselves. As a taxpayer of over 50 years I no longer feel the government helps us only the people who have their hand out. Maybe we tax payers should quit paying taxes and put our hand out. The government gives themselves nice raises, a nice pension
(not social security) and have all the luxeries. We the tax payer need to band together and change these things. I would be interested to see if anyone feels the same as I do. I bet if we stop paying taxes they fine us but they cannot find 11 million illegal immigrants.

Whether this particular instance is real or not is completely irrelevant and immaterial. The cold hard reality is that this type of “welfare” abuse DOES exist today, and is not too different from what this fictitious (or factual) story depicts. I believe “Assistance” programs are necessary and advantageous to some that honestly need it, but only to the few whom can not work because of a mental or physical disabilities. The majority of people enjoying & abusing this program and unfortunately many others, should have strict time tables given to them, allowing them “X” amount of time to pick themselves up, find work, pay taxes and contribute to society once again as opposed to “milking” our society of billions in assistance…

Dave in Honolulu has it right, as usual. This is a spoof. BUT HUD is terribly abused. Another out of control, well intentioned, welfare program of our government. Just needs more oversight which all the government programs seem to forget.
This is not the only problem with government spending. Foreigners can get government grants to open gas stations, etc. And those of us born here do not qualify. I schedule business appointments for a living, and believe me, the majority of businesses are not owned by Americans. They also receive Social Security benefits without paying a dime. Again, we do not qualify if we haven’t paid. Some come over here and pretend to be poor to receive medicaid and welfare.
And many of them are not grateful. They treat me with disrespect…..even though I have a right to be here and for them, it is a privilege.

This is all evidence that America has become a sanctuary for everything that Mother Nature has a hit out for. You may ask if I think I am better than Ms. Jasper? You bet! I have contributed more to society prior to leaving my parents house when I was 19. Simply put, politically correct lingo is learned by the fear of putting your true self into your own words when you may be in the presence of those who fear the truth.
And here I am at 74 years old working full time to make ends meet and when I file my income tax they take back part of my social security & I go on working fulltime so sharon can have all of this on my tax dollors. By the way–I have been living with friends for almost 2 years waiting for an apartment that is afforable & “yes” I do pay rent & utilities. I started working when i was 11 years old and have worked at least 1 job since then—-J

I have limitations that get in the way, but i don’t let them. I still work and pay all my bills. I just can’t believe all the hate in this IGNORANT RACIST BLACK WOMANS cold dead heart. I have the perfect solution…..trade all of our welfare leaches, regardless of color, one for one, with those alien nations, for what would be then legal aliens. Problem solved….the illegal aliens become legal, pay taxes, and do the work that they want, and our welfare leaches can go to those countries and see what it is like to really be poor and idigent and not have to worry about the way they are mistreated here. Anyway, our economy would be booming, crime would go down, no more ghetos, and just think of all that choice real estate in New Orleans and the rest of the country that would become available for workers, workers who would pay to live there.
Yes, – that is what our hard earning paycheck dollars are going to. My husband and I have been working very hard for over 35 years and struggles are still indured on a daily basis to make ends meet. Our daughter just gave birth to our first grandchild and she has worked, as well as HER HUSBAND. They have insurance, but still yet had to come up with thousands of dollars of what insurance premiums do not cover, that is, both of their insurance companies put together. Yet, our system caters to people like this one!!! Where have we gone wrong. Hard work, work ethics do not count for much these days it seems. PEOPLE BELIEVE THE WORLD OWES THEM because of who they are. The WORLD owes noone nothing. Everyone should have to work in some way, shape or form and contribute to society, not become an abuse to the hard working class.

I am so glad I’m retired and no longer supporting people who have no dignity because they’ve never succeeded at anything but breeding. I am also tired of calling illegal aliens anything other than what they are: criminals.
What should be done is deport the Section 8 carcasses, keep the illegals.
Make them legal and voila we now have citizens that are working and paying taxes.

Everyone should see welfare for what it is. It has to be the biggest vote buying scheme in the world. Dems keep forking out the checks and they keep electing them. I think if you get a Gov check you should have to work for it. The rest of us work for our paycheck. I pay for my kids to go to college. I’ve been working since I was 12 yrs old, working summers for my dad so iI would have money to buy my own school clothes. i have been supporting myself since I was 16 yrs old. Get a job and quit gripping about what they are not giving you……….
This article is a shame. Or in reality the subject is shameful. It does not make any difference the shade of one’s skin. I am sure that it was not meant as a racial statement. This is what we permit to happen when we allow our government to give things away. Once someone (government) gives you something, it becomes something that you expect. Something that is owed to you. There is only one way to stop this. I understand that not everyone can work(mental deficiencies, complete loss of limbs). Most others can do something. Therefore, these services should be limited to a short time period. My recommendation would be no more than 6 months unless the recipient is enrolled in, and passing a program of higher learning. Once they have completed the program they are given no more than six months continued support. I believe that government giveaways will be the destruction of this wonderful country. It is a shame that we have a system that permits those that will not work to support this county, have a vote in how it runs. We have a wonderful free country being destroyed by those that want to be handed life on a silver platter.
Wake up America…. These are our tax dollars….. Do you want to know what to do???BUY American, If you do not like what they have to offer, Buy nothing until they have something you like. VOTE for someone that will stop the government giveaways. If they campaign on a platform that continues to allow the tax payers to pay for those that will not work. Or want to insure that these people can get more tax dollars.. better housing, health insurance and the like. Vote them out. Color has nothing to do with this. I live in an are that is filled with white welfare frauds. I am a former emergency room employee and you should see what these people are doing to our hospitals. Make a doctor’s appointment? no way! Mama shows up with 5 kids in tow because one of them has a cold. Yes, she wants all of them checked out and her little finger hurts, so she wants an x-ray. She shows up at least once a week, and that guy with chest pain better not see a doctor before her because she was here first.

If you are poor, yes, you should have to live poor. I’ve worked hard and earned a college degree so that I can work even harder to try to make ends meet. Although my household income is over $100k, I still have trouble making ends meet.
I’m a progressive liberal and I think that we should take care of the people that can’t or even won’t take care of themselves but we should only meet their basic needs and only for the short term. No one should be allowed to take advantage of the system their entire lives, generation after generation. We could reinstate the public works system. People that need help should help out in return by doing work that needs to be done. Clean up and rebuild nawlins would be one example. I’m sure Sharron wouldn’t have a problem pushin a broom.

This article made me sick. It’s disturbing. Why is she going to fight this!? She has been giving everything without having to work. I realize that most of this article is an exaggertion, but it is true that a large part of receipients are like Welfare Queen Sharon. They get so much given to them and all they do is complain that it isn’t more. I had to receive assistance 25 years ago after my divorce and it was in a State and a time that did not enforce the law to make the father pay child support. I worked at a job that paid $3.65 an hour and I received $200 monthly food stamps, medicaid only for my son, nothing else. For the 2 years that I received these benefits I was made to feel so ashamed and like I was a lazy scum, I scrounged for every extra hour that I could get to pay for everything else. There was such a long waiting list for housing that I wasn’t able to get into a Section 8 house such as Sharon. I would have loved to be in the “dump” that she is living in. I had to rent tiny efficiency apartments that should have been torn down due to the disrepair of everything in them. I also think that Welfare receipients should be made to work and if you don’t already have a full time job, then get out and clean up the community to earn what you are getting. I am digusted by people that abuse the assistance programs and my taxes are paying for it. I have no problem with helping a person that is trying to survive and just needs a helping hand, but people like Sharon are too common, they just want to sit on their lazy butts and have everything given to them and not earn it. My husband and I work and make decent money now, but it takes everything we earn to keep us in our home and provide basic neccesseties and luxuries are a rare occurance. All of the ‘Sharons’ out there are disgusting lowlife and I resent supporting them and giving them a better life that I just can’t afford to have and I work very hard to manage what I have. I don’t care what color you are, you are lowlife scum if you don’t want to work but expect to have taxpayers support you.

I’m 42, white, and now married for the second time. While in my first marriage, I was brought low enough to have to take advantage of the offerings from the welfare system….for housing, food, and health care. I lived that way for 5 years, and the reasons for it were varied. How did I get to that point?
An abusive husband…..a very sick child…..there are many reasons why I ended up having to take what the government was willing to offer just to survive. I never had anything as nice as that TV. We were lucky…..we had a roof over our heads, and food to eat. My son was able to get the medical help he desperately needed. This continued for the 5 years, and is the only reason my son is living today.
When I finally broke away from that abusive bast**d, I found out the truth about welfare…..it’s designed to KEEP you down. Once I was alone, trying to make a life with the kids, trying to raise them properly, the “system” decided it was time for changes to be made, and automatically cut off anyone who had received services for more than 3 years. I was left with no home….no food….no medical….even though I was working 2 jobs, I could no longer take care of the kids. I finally placed them up for adoption, so that they had the chance at a better life. The “system” didn’t give a damn about who we were, or what we were trying to achieve…..they just saw us as a number, and cut us off cold.
For women like me, who desperately needed that type of help, it’s wasn’t there. Why? Because of people like many of you, who think the ONLY reason someone might be on assistance is to take something for free. It didn’t matter if the need was real to most of you……you only saw the worst of the ones taking what they could get, and decided that ALL of us were that way.
This Sharon is one of the bad ones. But not all people on welfare are. There are those who really do need the help, and appreciate it……and make continuous efforts in their lives to make a difference in their futures. Shouldn’t the ones who truly need help get it? Or, as some of you have said, should we all be judged on what people like Sharon do?
Think about it.
Critter lady, I don’t think anyon disagrees with you. Yours is an example of what is wrong with welfare and so is Sharons.
Too often the government people do not have the training or the intelligence to make informed decisions about need.

But I have to say the majority of the people I have personnaly witnessed on some type of government assistance could have achieved what they needed on their own. And you are right, the welfare system is designed to keep people down and continue to receive help. That is why laws and policies need to be changed! But, there again, it has been this way for as long as I can remember and I son’t think it is going ot change. I just wish other people were raised like I was, to earn everything you want and need in this life and not depend on someone to just hand it to you!

Sorry but I have SUCH a hard time believing this story about this lady and her sub-standard living conditions! The pictures of the aprtment/house especially look fake….although I DO KNOW there are PLENTY of people like her in this world….and of course here in Florida where I live as well….how sad if she is such a person that she has been raised to believe everything she says is true…but then again she is from generations of wefare system abusers it seems!
Look how clean and neat the house is (don’t get me wrong, some sec 8 tenants keep really neat houses) I don’t think this story is telling 100% of the truth based upon my experience with tenants and Sec 8 in my area.
I rent to both white and black tenants and they struggle to pay their water and electrica bills just like the rest of us. They do not have a tv let alone a plasma tv.

Well, everyone with half a brain can see this article is in jest. Sadly, it’s not far from the truth. Is it possible? Yes. Is it probable? More than we may even imagine. Can normal, hard working, middle class stiffs like us make a difference? Yes. Just by voting intelligently whenever election day comes around. It is the duty of each and everyone of us to run the government as we see fit in accordance with the law. This country was founded on the principle that all men are created equal in GOD’s eyes. Some people think that they are more equal because of a travesty long ago remedied by the Abolition Laws and more recently, Civil Rghts Laws. There are no more public separations of race, color or creed in today’s America but we need to keep working together for the common good of our nation, not ourselves. People who manipulate the system illegally will eventually be caught and prosecuted for the laws they break and punishment will be as severe as the law allows. Take this as a warning all who read this, and you know who you are. Stop stealing my tax dollars for the betterment of strong, able bodied but lazy men and women who think the government is in place to provide a roof over their head for cheap rent indefinitely. Your day is coming and I will be front row cheering the justice that will prevail over all who seek to drain the country of much needed funds that can be better used in our country’s defense against all who dare to tear her down.

Let us hope that none of you become so ill to where you can no longer work, therefore you lose your insurance coverage and therefore you lose your access to good doctors and perscription meds and you have small children who can’t help you in any way.

I am sickened that I’ve worked hard for 38 years but still struggle to get by … Can’t afford to get health insurance and sure in heck can’t get medical aid and may never even see my paid Social Security money … Hmmmm …. I’ll bet besides her housing, that she gets medical, dental and food ??? I am also angry about her racist comments because I am both black and white !!! Shame on her and shame on our country who allows this mentality and then also pays the same benefits to illegals at the expense of the rest of us who struggle

Just had to post that not everyone on section 8 abuses the system. I am a mother of 3 who has been on section 8 for about a year now. No, I don’t work. Instead I am in my third year of medical school. My husband died three years ago, (police officer, killed in a drug raid), and I tried working, attending school, and raising our small children alone. It was way more than I could handle. So instead of dropping out of school and supporting my children at some minimum wage job, I graceously accepted government assistance. Believe me the welfare does not afford the extras that this woman has. We live meagerly. I am grateful for the assistance we get which allows me to finish my education. I am longing for the day when I can be someone giving back to society and griping about taxes too. So for all of you who pay taxes which affords my children the necessities of daily life, I say thank you!
Most of the people that I’ve known who have been on welfare were on it because it was needed. Yes, I did know people who abused it. There are people in any system who find a way to do that. But from what I have seen it is not a majority, it is a minority. There were rules made in the 1990’s that limited the amount of time, in a lifetime, that someone can receive welfare.
I was on welfare twice. Once when I left my abusive, addict husband. I had an 18 month old and was 6 months pregnant. BTW, I did do drugs. I was on it for 3 years. I started working when my youngest was almost 2.
The second time I was on it, my 2nd husband had lost his job. I hadn’t been working for about a year because he made enough that I didn’t need to. We spent 6 months on welfare because finding another job for him and a job for me simply didn’t happen for awhile.
The welfare that I received at that time was medical, food stamps and cash assistance. I was given a section 8 certificate when my boys were babies, but I couldn’t find a landlord who would accept it. If you don’t find something within a certain amount of time, it expires and is given to someone else.
I raised both of my sons. I worked a lot of jobs to do that. This was with my physical problems that eventually became so severe that I was not able to work any longer. I finally had to admit that I was no longer able to work and I filed for SSDI. Luckily, this happened after I was no longer raising my sons. My sons are adults now, and I am now on SSDI. I am receiving food stamps because SSDI payments are below the poverty level. I am on medicare because I am on SSDI. I am on medicaid because SSDI is below poverty level.
I have worked hard since I was 16. I made 2 stupid choices in husbands and rectified those. I raise both of my sons. I am now 49. Anybody who says that I don’t need this help has screws loose, and I don’t owe anyone an apology for asking for help.
Section 8 was started in 1937, at the heigth of the depression. So was Social Security. Section 8 was always meant to be short term, and for most people it is. Social Security was started at the same time and it was because people who had worked all of their lives, and had lost everything, were dying because they didn’t have the money for a doctor, medication or food.
How many of you who are reading and/or commenting on this article would do ok if you suddenly lost your job and were out of work for 3-6 months. For most of the working poor in this country, all it would take would be 1 month before they lost everything. They are making just enough to make ends meet. They are working at jobs without benefits, or very little benefits. But they are not asking for help, they are not asking your or anyone else to take care of them. They are raising their children and they are doing ok. Now.
Don’t think that what you see in the news can’t happen to you. It can. And it can happen fairly easily. Sometimes in an instant. Or an illness. And suddenly you have nothing at all.

The true travesty of the welfare system is the fact that it pays people not to get jobs, yet people who have jobs and are struggling to keep their heads above water can’t access it. I work full time, but my husband who is mentally, physically and emotionally handicapped (yet does not recieve disability) and my two children are not insured, I struggle to pay rent and my bills each month. I often times have to choose to pay rent or pay few utility bills to keep them turned on. I make to much money for any sort of Federal or State assistance and yet I can’t afford to work. It would be better if I didn’t work at all and just collected Welfare. I don’t, instead I continue to struggle and somedays we sink and some days we swim.
That is the true travesty or welfare. Give it to the people who need it just long enough to get their heads above water then are willing to move one. By revamping the system and requiring that recipients work and by making it temporary it would create a much more meaningful and helpful system. Not to mention boost the economy and help curb the unemployement rate.

I think it’s wonderful we have a system where we can be the benefactors of so many in our country. Truly, we are the Land of the “Free.” We haven’t elevated welfare to the level of the Brit’s Royal Family (the ultimate welfare story), but we should be grateful we’re doing soooo much for all the Sharons out there. All I can add is, we need someone like Hillary leading the way for more of this.

When I was in the Army my government provided housing consisted of barracks at Fort Lewis that had been thrown up as temporary bay (open area) housing durring the Korean war and later converted into permanent housing (they added interior walls). We had one- and two-man rooms and all 25 or so of us shared the same showers, bathroom and washer & dryer. My uncle called my barracks “60 second buildings” because when they caught on fire they burned to the ground in about 60 seconds.
Every once in a while they would wake us up a four a.m. for formation and send some of us to Kuwait for the first Gulf War.
In exercies in Korea we lived in tents set up in a rice patty fertalized with raw human & animal waste.
We complained, we griped, we moaned (to each other), but we knew that the Army was doing what it could for us with the money alloted by Congress, and we realized that this is how U.S. Soldiers were expected to live, we had know that when we signed up. We made do.
We may not have shut up, but we put up. In America there is a price to pay if you choose to serve your country in the military, and this was part of that price. We were just glad that we had been given the opportunity to serve. And I wouldn’t trade that experience for ten times the untold thousands of dollars that Ms. Jasper has so ungratefully accepted from hard-working American taxpayers.
TerriS, thanks for sharing what you had to go through. You’re right: welfare is necessary because 90% of those reading this article would be in need of that safety-net if they had just one bit of bad luck.

I love standing in line in the grocery store behind a woman who’s obviously just gotten her hair and nails done, carrying a big designer handbag, wearing an expensive leather coat, while she pulls out a “Link” card (food subsidy program). Meanwhile, I’m carrying a modest coat, carrying an old, cheap, non-designer purse, paying for my groceries in cash, with the money I’ve earned. I look on the belt, and see that the majority of her items are the more expensive “name brand” ones, while I’m pinching pennies and buying whatever is cheapest.
Hey, it’s what I gotta do, so I can pay taxes for HER to get free food.
There are times, though, when I’d like to drive my ‘94 minivan into the side of her brand new car, on the way out of the parking lot.
I’m amazed that there have been so many responses to this article but none to the government which makes such foolishness allowable. The government has been enabling people for years. Keeping them on crutches for so long that they forget how to use their own legs! Send some of these emails to your congressman, senator, governor or president. See if you get a reply! The government does nothing because it doesn’t effect them and they don’t care how it effects you because the general population has not been concerned enough to make their voices heard. Government assistance should be run in the same manner as unemployment benefits… You get out what you put in. End of story!!
I know this is a satire, but it is all too real in GA. It is better to be a single mother with lots of children. The system here is paying for all their stuff; food, housing, and other items that one may need. They are also paying for things one doesn’t need; extra money for booze, smokes, etc.
I am a working, single mother (with no help from the father) of twin girls- age 2. I do receive some benifits from the state (280.00 for food and some daycare expense relief) for which I am very greatful. But here is the difference between me and the system leaches– I WORK FOR THE STATE OF GEORGIA AND PAY MY TAXES!!!! I work anywhere from 40 to 60 hours a week. I earn my benifits.
I think that all states should adopt a policy that states; We will help you with food and housing and necessary items. If you don’t have a job and are able to work, you have 90 days in which to find a job. If you find one, you keep your benifits as long as needed to help you get on your feet. If you don’t find one, your benifits are cut off. If you are uneducated, you must go back to school!!
This should not be an option. The USA needs more viable human beings in this country than slack asses that make it harder for those of us who truely need the help.
It’s shame that people abuse the system like Sharon and her family have for so many years. What is more of a shame is the lack of pride these kind of people have for themselves. Lack of pride low self esteem, and the expectation that some one owes them something.

The problem is not Dems, not Repubs. They both have not designed a system to allow temporary living expense. The key word being “temporary”. A system geered toward weening the poor off assistance, voluntarily OR INVOLUNTARILY is required. There should be no such thing as “free” money. Where is the “wage earning” in their scenario. This harsh world demands harsh action. Some people won’t learn any other way. Yeah, she’s Black and there are probably many like her but there are just as many that aren’t so leave the race out of it. How ’bout you: A) Vote. I bet only 20% of the people complaining actually voted. Dem. or Repub, just vote, it’s a necessary right to invoke change. If you don’t vote, in my book you can’t argue. Just another glaring example of how racist and lazy, yes, lazy some of the Africans who came to America have become. My ‘people’ were the original Americans. Yes American Indians. However, neither I or any of my family have ever taken one red cent from this country’s government. We are all gainfully employed, the working class poor, thanks to programs like this all over the country.
Each state is guilty of providing for the lazy and idle of all races, creeds, colors, and genders. Want to go to college free? Just spawn 3 or 4 children out of wedlock. Want a free ride? Play the ‘race card’. Jump the border and get the American dream, and don’t worry that you are here without legal process.
Personally, I am sick and tired of Black Americans thinking that anybody, anywhere of any race or culture owe them anything. They are not owed anything. People WORKED on government project in exchange for “vouchers”, not MONEY. They got vouchers for food, housing, and clothing. That was IT. No money. And, these subsidies (sp?) only went to those that WORKED.
There are MANY, MANY things that welfare recipients should be doing as opposed to taking money for nothing. It really bothers me that we have generations of families that TEACH one another how to live in such a fashion. Thank goodness I come from a prideful, high-strung bunch of individuals! LOL

This is not a black or white issue…I have see both sides taking advantage of what the giving people of the USA have to offer…to me, it is a breakdown of being able to believe and stand up for what is right and what is wrong…without fear of being labeled a racist, or intolerant. What people like this “Sharon” are doing is wrong plain and simple…and once we can get to that point…we are just beginning to fix a long line of other problems with this county. But, to be fair, this is the best place in the world to live…and there are also alot of good things that are going on in the USA. It’s very sad that we have people like this in our society, who don’t understand the value of hard work, self-respect, and example. I am a single mother of four children. I struggle from month to month trying to make ends meet. My children would love to have someone give us a big screen HD TV. But, they understand that we all have to work for the things that we get. My 8 year old just sold cakes for Valentine’s Day to earn extra money. It’s people like Sharon who teach today’s youth that the world owes them, that they shouldn’t have to work, and they should get everything for nothing. It’s our government that teaches people that they CAN get everything for nothing, (if they know how to work the system) and it’s obvious that they don’t even have to work hard to do THAT!!
There is a great amount of interest in this year’s presidential elections, as everybody seems to recognize that our next president has to be a lot better than George Bush. The Democrats are riding high with two groundbreaking candidates — a woman and an African-American — while the conservative Republicans are in a quandary about their party’s nod to a quasi-liberal maverick, John McCain.
Each candidate is carefully pandering to a smorgasbord of special-interest groups, ranging from gay, lesbian and transgender people to children of illegal immigrants to working mothers to evangelical Christians.
There is one group no one has recognized, and it is the group that will decide the election: the Angry White Man. The Angry White Man comes from all economic backgrounds, from dirt-poor to filthy rich. He represents all geographic areas in America, from urban sophisticate to rural redneck, deep South to mountain West, left Coast to Eastern Seaboard.
His common traits are that he isn’t looking for anything from anyone — just the promise to be able to make his own way on a level playing field. In many cases, he is an independent businessman and employs several people. He pays more than his share of taxes and works hard.
The victimhood syndrome buzzwords — “disenfranchised,” “marginalized” and “voiceless” — don’t resonate with him. “Press ‘one’ for English” is a curse-word to him. He’s used to picking up the tab, whether it’s the company Christmas party, three sets of braces, three college educations or a beautiful wedding.
He believes the Constitution is to be interpreted literally, not as a “living document” open to the whims and vagaries of a panel of judges who have never worked an honest day in their lives.
The Angry White Man owns firearms, and he’s willing to pick up a gun to defend his home and his country. He is willing to lay down his life to defend the freedom and safety of others, and the thought of killing someone who needs killing really doesn’t bother him.
The Angry White Man is not a metrosexual, a homosexual or a victim. Nobody like him drowned in Hurricane Katrina — he got his people together and got the hell out, then went back in to rescue those too helpless and stupid to help themselves, often as a police officer, a National Guard soldier or a volunteer firefighter.
His last name and religion don’t matter. His background might be Italian, English, Polish, German, Slavic, Irish, or Russian, and he might have Cherokee, Mexican, or Puerto Rican mixed in, but he considers himself a white American.
He’s a man’s man, the kind of guy who likes to play poker, watch football, hunt white-tailed deer, call turkeys, play golf, spend a few bucks at a strip club once in a blue moon, change his own oil and build things. He coaches baseball, soccer and football teams and doesn’t ask for a penny. He’s the kind of guy who can put an addition on his house with a couple of friends, drill an oil well, weld a new bumper for his truck, design a factory and publish books. He can fill a train with 100,000 tons of coal and get it to the power plant on time so that you keep the lights on and never know what it took to flip that light switch.
Women either love him or hate him, but they know he’s a man, not a dishrag. If they’re looking for someone to walk all over, they’ve got the wrong guy. He stands up straight, opens doors for women and says “Yes, sir” and “No, ma’am.”
He might be a Republican and he might be a Democrat; he might be a Libertarian or a Green. He knows that his wife is more emotional than rational, and he guides the family in a rational manner.
He’s not a racist, but he is annoyed and disappointed when people of certain backgrounds exhibit behavior that typifies the worst stereotypes of their race. He’s willing to give everybody a fair chance if they work hard, play by the rules and learn English.
Most important, the Angry White Man is pissed off. When his job site becomes flooded with illegal workers who don’t pay taxes and his wages drop like a stone, he gets righteously angry. When his job gets shipped overseas, and he has to speak to some incomprehensible idiot in India for tech support, he simmers. When Al Sharpton comes on TV, leading some rally for reparations for slavery or some such nonsense, he bites his tongue and he remembers. When a child gets charged with carrying a concealed weapon for mistakenly bringing a penknife to school, he takes note of who the local idiots are in education and law enforcement.
He also votes, and the Angry White Man loathes Hillary Clinton. Her voice reminds him of a shovel scraping a rock. He recoils at the mere sight of her on television. Her very image disgusts him, and he cannot fathom why anyone would want her as their leader. It’s not that she is a woman. It’s that she is who she is. It’s the liberal victim groups she panders to, the “poor me” attitude that she represents, her inability to give a straight answer to an honest question, his tax dollars that she wants to give to people who refuse to do anything for themselves.
There are many millions of Angry White Men. Four million Angry White Men are members of the National Rifle Association, and all of them will vote against Hillary Clinton, just as the great majority of them voted for George Bush.
He hopes that she will be the Democratic nominee for president in 2008, and he will make sure that she gets beaten like a drum.

I agree with the others that obviously this is a satire. But it is sad to realize that it is truly heading this way. Portions of this story are true, I am sure. I used to work in a factory with illegals. They took home 3 times more a week than I did, cause they didn’t have to take taxes. The government better wake up soon. It seems that the only thing they care about anymore is getting votes. None of them ever do what they promise during their campaigns. One of these days all the good Americans are going to say enough. My husband keeps saying that, it may not happen in our time, but he firmly believes there will be another revolution on American soil. Only it is going to be between the liberal government and the conservatives, not the British and Americans. I am starting to think he is right.

I live in Southern California. I am 50 years of age and have seen this paradise turn into a 3rd world country since the first amnisty in 1984. Take this example above and multiply it by 10 million just in California alone. There is one difference… insert a person into the picture who is here illegally and has multiple identities. This person collects multiple checks per month. Receives multiple debit cards and foods stamps per month. The one kicker is they are different than the lady in this picture. They are also working and taking jobs from us while sending all this money out of the country. They are building huge homes in thier homeland with our tax dollars.

I am a section 8 recipient. I am self employed and somewhat educated (3yrs of college). I am a childcare owner/operator. I have two children and it was difficult to keep a job when they would get common childhood illnesses so I decided to create my own employment so that I could provide for them. I offer 24/7 childcare. Yes, I am NOW a single mother. Their father passed from liver cancer almost 5yrs ago. Being a young couple at the time that he was hit with cancer (he fought for 7yrs.), he didn’t have the life insurance that would’ve helped me and our children a bit.
The Fair Market rent for my unit is $825. Each month I pay $790 and the county Section 8 dept. pays the landlord the remainder.
Yes, if there is a repair that needs to be done and i don’t know how to fix it or if the repair requires money then yes i complain until it is fixed. I work hard for my money and deserve to live in decent housing just like those that pay fair market rent themselves.
I will most likely be free from the system by the middle of next year as my business is ever increasing (which means even less sleep for me
) . I know that when i am assistance free I will still continue to accept children who recieve state assistance for their childcare fees and will never think twice about another person who works hard and honestly to provide for her children. There is no shame in recieving assistance if it is genuinely needed especially since I have paid taxes for 22yrs before recieving assistance and continue to pay now that I am a beneficiary of it.
It is said that 64% of Americans are just 2paychecks away from needing assistance of some sort themselves. I pray that when it hits a member of your family that you are a little more compassionate

She gets a whopping $600 to live on a month,which I continually have to fight with soical services on to make sure she gets to keep her medical benefits and household money, she lives in a shitty little trailer, and has an older car, I send her what I can, but to see this woman living like this and complaining about it.. makes me sick, she should try walkin a mile in my moms shoes for a day or two, maybe she’d appriciate what she obviously doesn’t deserve!

The overwhelming majority of welfare recipients are honest and receive benefits for a limited period. To hurt people by ending or limiting welfare just because of some well publicized cheats is cruel. Does anyone compare the wealthy thieves (see ENRON) to the welfare cheats? Debacles like ENRON hurt a lot more people than a couple of welfare cheats.
The welfare cheats should be exposed certainly, but the reason Sharon Jasper’s story is news is because it is not a common ocurrence. Does the media write stories about all the honest politicians? Thats not news. Same deal with welfare cheats.

I have some rental properties which I used to have on Section 8. Even though the government paid most of their rent they still would always have a hard time paying their own portion. But they could afford computers, video games, and cell phones. And then they would have MORE kids, even though they took from the government to pay for the ones they already had. And yes some of them did have HDTVs.
I can understand making bad choices once or twice, but at some point you need to figure out where those kids are coming from and quit having them if you can’t afford them!!
If your husband walked out or died after having the kids or maybe you lost your job and got in a bind I can understand.
But don’t keep having babies when you can’t afford the ones you already have!!!

To all of you who are posting comments about people abusing the welfare system, check your facts. Less than 2% of people receiving assistance are abusing the system. Thanks to welfare reform, it is harder than ever to even receive the assistance. The majority of people who receive this assistance are single mothers. They have to complete 40 job contacts in 30 days, and if they don’t find a job they have to go to a work training program. Yes, thats great, they should. HOWEVER, they are only getting approximately $350/month for a family of three. How do you pay for child care and support your family on that? You can’t take your child with you to job interviews. If they don’t follow through with their job training, child support proceedings, and many other stipulations placed upon them, they will be sanctioned. Sanctioned meaning that they will receive only partial or no benefits. While they are being sanctioned, they are still losing time off of their maximum lifetime allotment. To all of you who think that welfare reform is working, you are sadly mistaken. The only reason the welfare roles have lessened is due to the fact that they have made it nearly impossible to follow all of their “rules,” and it has gotten to the point of complete humiliation to even enter the welfare office. These women are disappearing, not finding financial stability.

I worked in Federally Assisted Housing for 30 years, having recently retired. This portrayal is not far wrong, but only touches the surface of abuse. There is another side to this that most in the public know nothing about. That is the abuse of the system in Section 8 housing for Seniors. Immigrant groups have learned that there is a glaring loophole in the system that allows children of the elderly immigrants to bring their parents into the country after signing documents that they will support them. After 3 years, they say they can no longer support them, and with no check by our government, the new elderly immigrants then become eligible for SSI, Medicaid, and senior housing. They communicate well in the immigrant community and put their names enmasse on the waiting lists for senior housing. Therefore, much of the Senior Housing designed for our citizens is being occupied by immigrants who never worked a day in their life in this country and get SSI and Medicaid which is more money than our citizens get. Meanwhile, the government does not hold the children accountable to support their parents, even though many own businesses, drive around in expensive cars, etc., because their parents transferred their money to their kids while in a foreign country. I used to see Mercedes, Rolls, etc. in the parking lot of Senior Housing of kids visiting their parents that they said they would support.
I do believe this woman lives in outrageous luxury at the expense of the hard-working taxpayers in her state, even though I also agree that some of this may be just drama. The one statement in this article I did NOT believe at all…the sentence where she claims she is “proud” of that one year she worked to take care of herself.
Anyone reading this and how she ignorantly shouted at the very people who keep a roof over her head and food on her table (obviously plenty of food, judging by her photo) should be smart enough to see that pride is something she will never know the meaning of. And rightfully so, in my opinion. This woman, and the hundreds of thousands of other able-bodied people who sit back and wait for the government to take care of them instead of doing for themselves, should be ashamed. They are the reason the US is no longer the strong nation it once was, and their insistence of remaining unproductive members of the American society will be the reason this once-great country of ours becomes as poor and weak as any other third-world country.
As working taxpayers, the only thing we can do to try to stop this from happening is to get out and exercise our right to VOTE. Go to the polls EVERY election and vote down the liberals who want to expand social welfare programs and add new programs this country cannot afford like a national health plan. Cast your ballot for the real leaders who have the guts to stand up and say the truth…that we need to put a brake on spending and redirect funds into workable programs to get people off welfare and back to work. And if you think there are no jobs out there for people with minimum education and no special skills you just aren’t reading the local newspaper. Maybe if Americans would get off their butts and back to work we could all proudly purchase items “Made in America” again instead of having to settle for cheaply made items made in China.
Charity does begin at home. Less money spent (wasted) in foreign lands and more directed to our own doorsteps is what this country needs and if it doesn’t happen soon it will be too late. When welfare was instituted in the US it was a time of great, widespread hardship. The social programs were begun to give a hand-up to those in need of TEMPORARY assistance. It was never intended as a means of generation after generation of families spurning the workforce to sit back and collect hand-outs forever.
We could stop every bit of welfare fraud in this country by requiring those receiving assistance to present themselves in person at the welfare office to collect their checks or food stamp cards and requiring each recipient to place their thumbprint on an electronically-scanned form just like many banks do when they cash a check. This way nobody could sit back and collect 5 or 6 benefit checks under various assumed identities as it is today.
But we are such a nation of weaklings who fear being accused of “prejudices” and being “not politically correct” that we won’t even make people come into their local welfare offices to received their benefits. No, we pamper and cater to them by making sure they are always mailed out on time and nobody has to be inconvenienced by having to drive a few miles to the welfare office. Maybe it’s not worth it to the rest of you, but I wouldn’t have any trouble sleeping at night knowing that our government had stopped BILLIONS OF DOLLARS worth of fraudulent welfare payments by initiating this kind of security. Once John Doe reported to his nearby welfare office and put down his thumbprint and received his benefits that would be that…taxpayers would know John Doe could not also claim benefits under assumed names of Joe Doe or Jake Doe and cause undue burden on the hard-working tax-paying citizens who have to settle for living in poorer housing and often can’t even afford health care even though these non-working welfare recipients also have free medical care for their families.
I work in the 9th ward in New Orleans. I deal with these people on a dailey basis. This article is in no way satire. It is sad but true. In new Orleans there are thousands of people just like this woman, I walk in their homes everyday. The abuse of system has been going on for far to long and needs to stop!!!
I have worked since I was 14 years old. I was taught to stand on my own two feet, be an example to my children and live by morals of hard work. Most of the comments are felt by working America, and to see someone get a free ride, ticks working america off. Is there more to this story? Maby. But I just got hurt a little over a year ago and had to have a spinal fusion. Not many see my pain, and the help I need is not there for me. I want to work but can’t. I was offered 8G’s through a work center funded by our goverment to go to school and rejoin the working comunity. I can’t sit up longer than three hours, much less go to school, but I will do it because I need to eat as well as my family needs to eat. I don’t get algibra so a degree is out of the question. So a certifacate is all I’ll qualify for. I could use this lady’s bennefits, but don’t. It would be unAmerican to me. So even tho I’m classified as disabled, I will do my best to provide for my wife and kids. Savings are wiped out and were living day to day. I may not have a home in the future, if things don’t change soon. And who made it hard for folks like me? The section 8 people. I agree that a drug test should be in place to see if you can get aid. But there’s a way around that too!The cracks in the system need fixing!! Wake up people. Write your congress man or woman. Let your voice be heard. Together, we shall over come! And this is just one of the many changes that need to be fixed. If no one unites, it will be politics as useauel. Talk the talk, walk the walk, but if it could be a quick fix, it would be fixed. I went to social services on crutches and was denied everything due to the fact that I was buying a home. Meanwhile a young boy comes in, hops over the velvet rope and says hey CC, got my check ready? And out pops the envolope with the check. I don’t know his situation, but the hoppin’ and laughter led me to think there’s nothing wrong with him, mentaly or phyisically. I felt let down as I hobbeled out. It’s not the clerk’s fault I didn’t qualify. It’s ours as a nation. The system failed me when I needed it most. I am gratefull for the schooling and the school’s grateful for the goverment money, but all 8G’s will get you is a CDL to drive a truck. Beats a sharp stick in the eye!!!

Yes, it says in the Bible that we should help the poor, but read it correctly and understand before you start quoting it! Ugh. I get so sick of people thinking they understand the Bible and getting it completely wrong: we are to help others (the poor) help themselves. The rules in the Bible were to leave a section of field or harvest for the poor to work in and reap for themselves. Not for the ones who owned the field or harvest to do all the work and then just hand it over to them! The poor were still expected to work!!!
And, yes, though much of this article is satire, the most shocking thing is it’s the truth. This woman actually invited the press into her home to discuss her horrid way of life on welfare. Yes, the photo is of her in her home. Yes, the tv is hers. And yes, she did shout to a caucasion in a city meeting to “Shut up, White Boy!”

I also think that ANYONE of ANY race should be cut off from welfare if they are unwilling to work. Single parents with Infants and toddlers should be subsidized until their children are old enough to go to daycare, first a half-day and progressing to full-day like all toher working people do with their kids…but the non-contributing parent should have their wages garnished to replenish the State funds and the recipient should be drug-screened as long as they are on the dole.
Face it, some people need more help than others and they should be afforded whatever aid we can give them in order for them to become contributing members of society.
If they are unwilling to contribute to society, let them go live in a tent and provide for themselves.
Sterilize them first to stop the sludge from spreading throughout the gene pool…

I agree with the fact that she has overdone the ungratefulness. But to the comments of people saying to ban all wellfare… I have to disagree. I am a 21 year old single mother of 1. I work a 40 hour work week and can barely afford diapers when it comes time. The ONLY government assistance I am on is the fact that my daughter gets her medical for the state. I alone am without, I can’t afford it. But if it weren’t for the state’s help I would have problems immunizing my daughter, let alone getting medicine when she’s sick. I honestly could take all the help they want to give. I only bring in 1,200 a month. After diapers, milk, bills, daycare, and gas my pockets are empty. I could completly abuse the system, but I only take what’s needed, and that’s for my daughter’s health.

Sad, but a true situation in America. There are so many with so much government subsidy, why do anything to try and make it on you own, except to sit and complain about how bad they have it and ” poor me” The government encourages those who want to, to live this way. There are ways that the government can improve these conditions, but as you can see, we have a government that has no desire to do anything positive about it. As Sharon has stated, her family has been brought up in this “handout ” enviroment their entire life, and the government has been willing to keep it up as long as they apply for these “freebees”. I agree with those who express the fact that if illegal alliens were deported, there would be more employment for Americans. And if these “down and out, poor me” Americans did not take these vacant jobs, cut off the government supplied living. This is to help them get back on their feet, not a standard of living. If they are not willing to make an honest effort, why should anybodys tax dollars help support those who want to sit by and live on our hard earned dollars that we try and get our families by on in the great America. Sharon reminds me of a young couple who were displaced by Katrina to a small town in Montana. There were given a very nice apartment (new or newly renovated), with a kitchen full of appliances and cupboards full of food, home totally furnished…..the whole nine yards. The wife was a little biddy thing but the guy was huge. Must have been 6′ 5″ and about 350. Anyway, the guy from NBC asked the big guy what he thought of the town’s generosity. He said “well, it’s very nice and all, but a little scary…….they expect me got get a job!” That last comment went over the journalist’s head like a 747. He must have had his fingers in both ears and his eyes closed, because it didn’t register at all, and to me, it was the most telling comment of the interview. You can guess where the couple came from in New Orleans…..Section 8 housing.
We made the mistake of feeling sorry for a Section 8 family one time and letting this lady and her eight kids use our one rental property. They DESTROYED it. Did well over $10 grand in damages to a newly renovated home!
The best part is that HUD then told us that the destruction of our property was “normal wear and tear” and that if we wanted to collect we needed to go after the tenants.
The lady was BROKE with eight kids! If she had money to pay damages to the homes she and her brood destroyed, they wouldn’t need welfare.
Oh, and she ended up demolishing another home right after ours from another landlord that took pity upon her.
Oh, and this lady also had a huge TV, even as they wrecked out home.

When I grew up my parents had no money, but I had no idea. Every monday I would carry a few dollars in to school to give my teacher to pay for my public school lunch. I was the only student out of 25 or 30 that paid so the teacher had a special envelope “just for me”. I did not understand the “free lunch” program until my mother explained it to me many years later. My father was a full-time minister part time auto-mechanic that was able to feed his family making an income that was 50% less that the governments acclaimed “poverty” line. He felt that if you were ABLE to pay for something like a lunch you should. That instilled in me at an early age the responsibilities we have for our actions and choices we make in life. My father could have accepted government assistance for food housing and free school lunches but he did not. We DID NOT have a new car or in-style clothes or even a TV. We DID have good food from our garden, clean clothes and a roof over our head. We had pride in ourselves our country and faith that God would provide for all our needs.
At 17 I left home to make my way in the world. Without grants or scolarships I graduated college in 5yrs with a full BA degree. I did that by working 3 jobs all the time I went to school. Not one individual or government entity offered me a penny and since this was America I thought that was how it should be. Everybody working as best as you can to get ahead. IF I CAN DO IT YOU CAN TOO!
While working those jobs I ran into people abusing the system at every level. I worked with a guy that bragged about his woman and his 5 kids getting welfare and every kind of assistance, leaving his income as a cook part time in a resturant to pay for his brand new BMW. I let it go.
I stood in line behind food stamps “families” discussing which steaks their pit bull liked best while I bought the cheapest loaf of bread I could get and some jelly with change my brother and I scraped together so we could have something to eat that week. I let it go.
It has been 32 years since I left my fathers house to make my way in this great experiment we call America. Because of the way I was raised I never asked for a handout I just kept paying my taxes and working hard.
These last 30 years have left their mark on my body, mind, soul, and spirit, yet I have been successful. Not long ago I was beaten and robbed while rehabbing one of the many homes I rent to low income “families”. I can personally attest that the attitude of Miss Sharon and the countless others I have crossed paths with over the years is not the exception others would like you to believe It Is The RULE. I challenge any one of you to go visit the “HOOD” in your city and town or better yet try to provide housing to them. You will see this “I deserve” mentality starts as soon as they can talk.
Last year I paid more in taxes than 10 average american families made in total yearly incomes.

This woman is proud to have inherited the cycle of section 8 housing from her parents and is elated to be able to pass it on to her children! It is families like hers as well as white, black, yellow families, whatever color of skin you have that make tax payers so angry and want to fight to limit support for the poor who truely cannot support themselves. Someone needs to give her and her kids a swift kick in the butt and make them work!!!! She’s using the system and laughing all the way while using the excuse that she is black and that is why she is treated so poorly! I know a woman who was on walfare for a while but worked very hard to improve her job situation and to remove her children from the welfare environment. In my opinion there is nothing to debate. What this story is representative of is a system that has been broken for years. In an age where we have all been “sensitized” to everyones political, religious & cultural needs & differences, we have created a system that doesn’t allow debate or change because to do so would perpetrate the “racist” heavy-hand of the majority. Imagine: free food, free rent, free clothes, free furniture, free medical & dental care, free legal representation, free transportation (when needed to go to the welfare office or social security office), free phone, free TV, etc. There’s not a damned thing anyone can say or do about it without painting themselves a racist. What a coup this is for lazy-asses everywhere, and for all the Abby Hoffman (Steal This Book) bleeding heart liberals that wanted to “beat down the man”! My kid works in a call center re-charging minutes on pay-as-you-go cell phones. States have now authorized cell-phone minutes to be a legitimate expense for welfare recipients. The debit-type cards that many states issue the recipients can now be used like a regular debit or credit card over the phone to buy more minutes for your cell phone. Nice huh? This is one of the latest “benefits” to being in the system – obviously we all know that have a cell phone is an “essential” service. Shame on us and shame on the elected representatives for letting this happen. It is a humanitarian concept & effort gone terribly wrong. As an experiment, I wish 20/20 or 60 Minutes would follow behind (documenting with cameras) a “20-something” white male while he tried to get setup in the system like Her Royal Majesty Jasper has done. Perhaps he could use similar racist comments like she did. It would be interesting to see the reaction (and most likely ass-beating) he gets. Would the end result get him the same entitlement as Ms Jasper? I think it is safe to say that he would have as much chance of utilizing the welfare system as Ms. Jasper does of ever stepping foot into one of the tents she mentioned.
Our society has developed this “no one loses” mentality. It’s like the sports teams little kids participate in these days where there are no winners or losers. Why? Because everyone is equal and no one should feel bad. Same with people on welfare – we don’t want them to feel “different” or “badly”, so we make sure they have all the same accoutrements as someone who works. When is the last time you have driven through the projects in a large city? I used to live near Olson Memorial Highway & Humboldt Ave North in the heart Minneapolis’ north-side projects. What always confused me was the obvious wealth of some in the ghetto. Nice cars, expensive clothes, expensive grooming (hair & nails) & jewelry that I could never think about affording. I also lived on the south side of Minneapolis near the Little Earth Projects on Cedar & 26th South and saw people living in relative squalor. The difference was ethnic. The north-side projects are predominately black while Little Earth is predominately Native American. I have traveled all over this country and have seen project housing in Hunts Point – NYC, Newark, NJ, Detroit, MI, East Palo Alto, CA, Hialeah Gardens, FL, Compton, CA, Tacoma, WA, Memphis, TN, New Orleans, LA, Houston, TX, OK City, OK, etc, etc. I traveled for 20 years of my life (working). It’s obvious this country has gotten away from whole intent and purpose of what welfare was supposed to be and is nothing more than a socialized system that is seen in Europe – most notably the UIK where it is commonly (and favorably without stigma) referred to “the dole”. Wasn’t our system created though to temporarily help those who are desperate? I’m pretty sure it was never intended to become the way of life that it has for thousands, if not millions, of Americans. Question is: how to we take it back? Once you give something, it is not going to be taken away without a fight. This is the root of changing the system – how do we answer this question?

This article shares nothing new! I am a 31 year old Latina, and a liberal. I also grew up poor in a gang/drug/crime infested area. I grew up in Watts, California. When my family and would pass by the projects we’d see their parking lots FILLED with brand new cars and I always wondered why my family couldn’t have that since my father was a hard-ass working man ever since he’d crossed the border at the age of 15 … illegally. My father and mother worked so damn hard for the few things we had and we were proud of it. I’ve always known that MANY ‘welfare lifers’ are useless people … I knew many black and Latinos who abused the welfare … bitched about not getting enough money while sitting in front of their huge TV’s and wearing (real) gold earings, necklaces, rings, ect. The worst part is they were actually proud of cheating the system. It disgusts me and always has. Due to my parents work ethics, I overcame many obstacles and am now a counselor of clients who I know would genuinely benefit from a housing program. I think we need to put the ‘welfare lifers’ in jail as well as their kids if they follow suit. I’m sick and tired of poorness being used as an excuse to being ignorant, arrogant, and just plain A$$H@!#$.

This had a ring of truth to me, well, until I saw the pic of her bathroom, of course. Regardless, I went to snopes and sure enough the quotes and the first pic (with the big screen) are legit! This woman and many, many, others like her have never known any different and thats just sad, really. Never the less they disgust me. I watched my Dad work driving a semi until the day he died. He was too proud to even get on food stamps, even though a few times my mother and him talked about it. Still we made it month to month. We may have ate a lot of biscuits and gravy but we didnt starve. Now my brother works hard and makes a pretty comfortable living and so do I and I couldn’t imagine not having the pride that comes with knowing I pay my own way….seems most people would kinda feel owned. Our son has been to Iraq twice and was shot three times. We have a son-in-law that is currently serving his country in Iraq and one son-in-law that will ship out to Iraq in April. Things like this go on daily and unfortunately there are too many people (of all colors)that have a “What can I Get’ mentality. I’m saddened that some folks feel they must go so far as to put together a fake piece to mock people. I know why I was meant to see it. I’m teaching a section on social (ethnic) and political satire. This would be excellent.
I could make an effective point against some parts of the welfare system without denigrating a black or Mexican person (at least someone real, not fictional, as the woman in the photo). I just paid over $6000.00 in taxes, am what we call middle class and can NOT afford a big screen tv which if you will read closely was a real deal in her house. And the place sure looks a lot better than the place I’m renting! Not for nothing folks, but let us look at the big picture. There is a major problem with the welfare system in this country. Too many people spanning generations have become so used to recieving the “free” money every month that we, the working tax payers, pay for. I can remember when I was in dyer need of public assistance back in the mid 80’s and was turned down because the Social Services Department clerk said I could work more hours. Mind you, I wasn’t looking for a handout, but simply food stamps to assist with formula and diapers for my daughter. At that time I was working 2 jobs, 1 as a snow plow mechanic, and the second stocking shelves at a supermarket at night. The one thing I did notice while on that line was that most of the people had brand new designer clothing, sneakers, and in the parking lot were a lot of brand new cars. This being said, it had caused me to become very bitter towards several races and ethnic groups. However, over the years I have come to realize that it is not their fault. I really should be pointing the blame at our own “enabling” government. The same government that says that it is OK to let people come here illegally and tend to our gardens and rebuild our houses, and hey, while we’re at it, lets give them full legal protection under the Constitution (even though they are actually criminals for being here), while the welfare recipients can enjoy the free ride granted by our elected officials. The whole idea of putting the welfare community to work in state and government jobs is a great theory. however, how would that truly stand with the unions and the state workers who have worked as sanitation workers and sewage workers for countless years hoping to recieve their pension at retirement. The whole welfare system needs to be refomed. Maybe mirror the way the unemployment sytem works, 26 weeks of benefits then you are cut off. Hey, I might be on a rant here, but that is my opinion.

I have a thought… Its a simple plan.
Make all Welfare recipients show up every morning, Monday – Friday at 7 am, clock in and sit in a room with no television, no music, no talking. They will “work” until 4 pm. There will be two 15 min. breaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. A 30 minute lunch break is sufficient. (You must prepare your own lunch or purchase one from McDonalds, Burger King, whoever. But remember to hurry, 30 minutes goes by quickly.)
If caught talking, you will be given one warning. One warning only. If you talk again, you will be dismissed for the day and one days pay will be docked from your Welfare check regardless of how many hours you attend that day. Each day that you do not show up, you will be docked from your Welfare check. After 3 no shows, you will be “fired” and will not receive anymore Welfare. That’s it. This should be an easy way to “earn” a living. A simple plan.
Now, how many of you think that this would work? First of all, how many days do you think people would show up for this. After the first day or two, they might not be able to stand sitting in a room all day with nothing to do and no TV to watch. They would become bored. After a few days they may not wish to come back, but, hey, that’s their choice, they will not be “paid”. If you don’t show up for “work” you don’t get paid. Oh, don’t start whining about who’s gonna keep the kids, you’re getting paid, so pay a babysitter just like everyone else does. If you’re sick and don’t show up, you will be disqualified from Welfare because Welfare is not for sick people. Disability is for sick people. You will be treated like a regular employee. And, don’t even think about taking a vacation with pay. Ain’t gonna happen’. After one year you will be elligible for one week off without pay, two years, two weeks off without pay.
Really just a simple plan, instead of staying home all day, they will be sitting in a room, staring at a wall. Might make you want to go out and get a job. If not, who cares…

Ok, first of all. healthcare is not a problem. you can get health care. it is against the law to refuse some one in need of health care. its the paying for it that is the problem. It is the choice to go get the health care that is the problem. I have health insurance and I still chose not to go to the doctor depending on wether or not I want to pay the copay or the doctor bill that will go with it. So saying that welfare or healthcare is a problem isnt completely a truth. There is healthcare. Wether or not you want to pay for it when the bill comes in is the question. Or if you can afford to have that bill over your head is the real question. I know I dont. I know in my situation still if they would deduct what I pay for my sons health insurance from what I make that would put me in the bracket to qualify for medicaid. But thats not how it works. So, I just pay for health insurance for him, plus the copays and the deductibles and make less than what you other people do who qualify because I chose to work for a living and try to make something of my life and make an effort to better myself. I struggle. My son takes 4 medications each day for his adhd, asthma and allergies. I pay 150.00 a month just for his health insurance plus an additional 120.00 in copays for his prescriptions. If he happens to get sick, that doubles. So you see, it would be so much easier for me to go part time at work, and just say screw it, put him back on medicaid…. But I have respect for myself. I am a hard worker.
I was 17 when I had my son and he had medicaid when he was born so I was on welfare many years ago, but I worked my way off of it. Thats what its there for. When those in NEED of it can use it, better them selves, and get off of it. NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE AND SPIT OUT KID AFTER KID AFTER KID. AND NOT WORK and RAISE GENERATIONS OFF OF IT. We all have hard times. We try to go through life and better ourselves. Or should try to better ourselves.

Sorry, but I just had to voice my opinion again. I am a single mother of two children. I have only a high school diploma, and some college. I have worked from the time I was old enough to babysit at age 12. I have worked hard almost all of my life. Only once did I ask for public assistance and that was only because I had lost my job and had to feed my kids. I was only on unemployment for approximately three months, while the whole time I was out looking for work. Not sitting at home complaining that my apartment wasn’t pretty enough or that I couldn’t find a job because I’m Hispanic. If you make an excuse for everything that happens to you in your life you’ll be the type of person as this woman. I am far too proud to have to depend on others to pay my bills or to feed my children. I did however use the option that my hard working tax dollars had been paying for all those years. Kind of an insurance policy!
That was five years ago. I have been working at the same job since then and I even saved enough to buy a small house for myself and my kids. I am living the American dream. Not sitting on my lazy ass complaining about the free stuff I have or the free rent I don;t have to pay. This woman needs to have a rude awakening. Kind of like our parent did when we were small. When a child was spoiled and didn’t appreciate what they had, parents would take away all the toys and any privileges that came with it and made us earn them back! This article is disturbing on so many levels. I paid over 10,000 in taxes last year to buy this woman food and housing and a big screen? What? I am sourly displeased at the use of my tax money. I have MANY friends, both Democrat and Republican, from all ethnic groups that I interact with often and whom I admire dearly. Raised in an East Texas family of Democrats, I changed to Republican after knowing that I agreed with Conservative precepts rather than Liberal. I say this to make the point that ‘change comes naturally over time.’ Changes in my thinking… and changes in programs. From abuse, welfare has morphed into something other than what it was designed (see #198 Lea) (and thanks to jimbyrd for this contribution WELFARE AIN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE). Like sex, welfare can be a good thing when treated properly… a bad thing when it turns to rape. Same ingredients, different treatment and outcome.
Many of my friends work very hard for a decent living, which brings me to another important point of my message. With amnesty advocated under a Liberal President and Congress, our nation’s workers will multiply in number and hardship. That’s a given. I have a very real, heartfelt concern about jobs that will be taken from my friends… as well as those others who are struggling in our America. The recent debate between the two Democratic presidential candidates gave a clear message of amnesty on their agenda. Therefore, the math is simple… more outsiders equals fewer jobs. With cleanup of the welfare system, we can help a greater number of the needy… AND THE NUMBER OF NEEDY IS GREAT! I would certainly volunteer to do my part.

I’ve worked since I was sixteen years of age. I was the oldest of seven children and my father was a laborer and one day he nearly had his foot cut off and the company only gave us $25.00 per week to live on.
I served in the U.S.M.C. for eight years and then worked in law enforcement for 20 years when I was injured in the line of duty I received $532. per month and that came from our own pension fund.
I later was able to go back to work and I joined the Coast Guard and now I’m retired because of the original injury disabled me again. I’m trying to put my daughter through college and she was put at the back of the line and had a very difficult time getting grants for school while others went to the front of the line. Now I’m living on Social Security Disability which comes to a little over $700. per month. I still have a mortgage to pay, doctors bills, medicines that I can’t afford to purchase thanks to the Billion dollar Pharmasuiticles corporations and I can’t even drive my old car a 1995 Chevy P-U to the food store because I can’t afford the $3.15 cents for a gallon of gas. I’ve knocked on every door available and have been turned down. I fought for this country many times and this is the way I get treated. I’m about to loose my house and become a street person because of I can no longer pay for my homeowners insurance and I can’t sell my house because thanks to Washington D.C. my house now isn’t worth what I owe one it.
There is certainly something horribly wrong with this country which I love when immigrants, illegal aliens etc. have everything given to them and now I will be on the street soon maybe allowed to sleep in my fifteen year old truck.

The place to start cleaning up this mess is to pass a law that would take away the right to vote of any citizen who had been a recipient of welfare in any form in any 12 months prior to any election. That would quickly eliminate the “bleeding hearts” that use the blood of working individuals to buy votes from those who want nothing more than life to be FREE. If people can’t be fiscally responsible for themselves, why should they have any say in how our tax dollars are spent? That isn’t a racist attitude, that is something called being accountable!

My brother-in-law bought a new home, mortgage, insurance and taxes in Houston. In the same sub-division, the Katrina “refugees” are living free and tearing the hell out of the area. Crime is sky rocketing. My wife and I pay over $1200 a month for medical insurance while these free loaders get in on the dole. Go right ahead and vote democratic and you will see more of the same crap. Don’t think the Union will give a damn about you when you retire. My former employer went into bankruptcy, came out again, and we lost our pensions..rather, sent to the PBGC for 15 cents on the dollar. Where was our Union….they didn’t give a damn about us because we wern’t paying dues anymore.

I had to fight with a loan office and a bank to get my home. I had to prove I was working and making the amount of money I said I was making (which is below poverty level even though I work 50 – 60 hours a week).

I Sincerely hope that this whole thing is a joke. I am so fed up with all of this talk of oppression and no oportunity! I live in Houston, and we, more than any other city, have seen the flood of Katrina evacuees come to our city. Our mayor and city tried to do the right thing by setting up temporary housing for all of these evacuees. I don’t think that will ever happen again. Do you realize that to this day (2/27/08), we still have Katrina evacuees here who are complaining that their government checks are about to stop coming in, and they don’t know how they are going to survive. Hmmmm…. Here’s a thought….. Get a frickin job like the rest of us!!!
My wife and her family came here from Vietnam in 1975 with what they had on their backs and couldn’t even speak English. They had almost no government help and nobody else to rely on. But through hard work and determination, lets look at how they are doing today:
Father-in-law: Owns a vietnamese newspaper in Arlington, TX
1st sister-in-law: Optometrist who owns her own practice
2nd and 3rd sisters-in-law: Popular Vietnamese singers.
My Wife: Works for a large international petrochemical company downtown and does very well.
No other country in the world offers more opportunity for those who are willing to work for it. The problem that we have in the U.S. is that there are many millions of people here that are content to just get by on what the government gives them. And unfortunately, they are reproducing faster than the people who are actually working for a living. The most disturbing part of this is that many of them are having 9 or more kids just because they know that they will get more government aid for having more children.

You realize Mitt Romney would have fixed this, have you seen the mormon welfare system, even the “disabled” people work jobs they are physically able to do. Everyone works. There is no free ride and no one stays in the system for ever. As they enter it, a game plan is made with them to get them out and they have to work to recieve benifits. They don’t have food stamps they have a store house and the food there is good. Not amazing just healthy food you have to prepare no prepackaged stuff or fancy cearals and believe me you get tired of it fast! They help you get what you need to get by and do what they came to help you get on your feet quickly. They have job interview training and resume making and help you with Job searches and make sure you have something nice to wear to your interview, (from their 2nd hand store of course.) You get a Job, there goal is not to have anyone on the system more then a month and definately not beyond six months if there are extenduating cercumstance. That is what the U.S. needs to adopt.

Now my comments, it is a disgrace to this country to have people like her milking the system for money. I am not black, but I raised my 3 boys alone often working 2 & 3 jobs to accomplish this. I did not get any help from their fathers, nor did I take handouts,and sit on my a$$ complaining that I deserve more!! I do own my own home, pay ALL my utilities and UP KEEP on said home. I live paycheck to paycheck and still work 2 jobs. How is the government helping me? At least I’m trying!!! (and doing a pretty darn good job too)
What galls me is that she’s probably eating much better than we ever did (she sure doesn’t look like she’s starving does she?) and probably has a new car handed to her every few years (my Jeep is now 12 years old).

Why is everyone up in a tizzy? We all should pay our fair share to those less fortunate. According to Hillary and Obama, we are all rich, and winners of life’s lottery. We lucked out, and didn’t really work hard and earn our way. Married couple joint income of $75,000 makes us all “rich”. So let’s be thankful that us rich people can and should contribute and sacrafice even more. I for one, can’t wait for November. Why not follow the Jamestown, Va. colony example? If those people didn’t work, they didn’t eat. I used to purchase Christmas cards from the “Foot and Mouth” artist. These people were paraplegics or quadraplegics, yet they were still attempting, and succeeding, to be functional members of society.
Meanwhile, I juggle perscriptions to try and clear my head so I can work and take pain pills all day long and dread the approach of disability because I know it will take me a minimum of THREE YEARS to attempt to get the disability insurance payments that I have paid into for over 30 years of work. Because, you know, all of us who wind up on disability just love the idea of getting a salary of about 30% of what we could make if we continued working. And that’s not even mentioning the 2 years you have to wait to be eligible for Medicare Insurance. Yeah, that’s right. Once you are declared disabled you are supposed to live for 2 years on a substandard income with no medical insurance. Sure, I only spend 5,000 a year on medical bills WITH insurance. I’m sure I’ll have no trouble paying my medical bills while on that pittiable disability income I qualify for.
This is so disheartening, and it just never changes. It just gets worse. Wish I lived in a nice place like that with beautiful hardwood floors and that huge state of the art television, my whole family would love.
I believe in working. Been working since I was 16 years old. I am now 48, living in an apt, late on the rent every month, pay my bills just in time to avoid cut off. Am hounded by bill collectors daily. I am ready for bankruptcy. We work. We scrape. We do without. We are thankful for all that we have. We are thankful for our healthy children and granddaughter, that live with us, to help them get on their feet. My youngest daughter is starting college the end of March. Just the calculator she bought yesterday was $130.00. required for her math classes. Somehow we will make it and in 5 yrs and 3 months by the grace of God, she will have her Masters and be an elementary teacher. I have gone without my bifocals for 4 yrs because I don’t have the money to get them. Period. I just watched my husband go thru the winter months in tennis shoes, working outside, he did get a new pair about a month ago for $9.00 at Walmart. Need more now, they are all ripped out. I could go on & on, and guess what. We are happy. We are tired. We are thankful. We are blessed. We are hopeful and have dreams and I believe we will reach them. We are on no type of assistance, and don’t want to be. They would probably say we aren’t eligible because we make too much money. The corruption is so deep and so widespread. I am very disgusted with ALL of this. And the illegal immigrant problem too. Same thing. And yes, if we as ‘white’ make any reference to their heritage, we are called racist. Where is the United White College Fund ? ETC….

I am so thankful that I was able to raise my own children by accepting, gratefully, the aid that my state gave me. I was able to see to their needs without leaving them with strangers, and had it been necessary for me to work at a minimum wage job, we’d have had NOTHING!! The childcare alone would have been more than I could afford. When all the welfare laws changed, I opted to DO childcare for others who were working at low income jobs, and the state paid me a whopping $1.03 per hour for each child. They would only allow me to have six children, so, while it afforded me the opportunity to stay home and finish raising my own brood, it was very limited income. However, with budgeting, we made ends meet (sometimes with a little flap hanging over at the end of the month), and when my youngest turned 18 I was cut off of medical (which had kept me alive) and I quit childcare and went into the job force. I worked at several minimum wage jobs, then was able to find the job I now have (I am nearly 67 years old now) with benefits, so that I could get back on my thyroid and blood pressure medications. I now supplement my paychecks with social security, which is not even close to enough to survive on. My point is this………I did accept welfare, but am eternally grateful that it was there for a divorced mom of six who couldn’t bear to leave her children with strangers who might abuse them. All of my kids are hard working, with families of their own. It probably would have cost the system more to pay for childcare for them than it cost to pay our stipend every month, and my kids were raised with values. Not one of them is on Welfare today. Those who say that welfare is intended to KEEP people down are right, but it’s a no-win situation when you are a mom of so many, stuck in a small town with the bread winner having removed himself from the area forever. People like Sharon do exist, and it’s sad, but it’s a shame to expect the government to abolish welfare and Section 8 altogether because of people like her. They should be monitored better, and removed from the roles when they are no longer in need. Thankfully, they are in the minority.

Its a disgrace some of these people living on welfare like they do. Im a single 36yr mother, with the same job for 16 yrs. The only welfare I had was medicade when I was pregnant too help me with the medical expenses that my insurance didnt pay for it. It not easy working my butt off for the little pay I do get and struggle too pay the bills I do have. I struggle every day, but Im happy im out there working and not living off everyone else.. The government needs to wise up and get these users off their butts and out working or make them live out in tents!! I have seen this welfare fraud from coast to coast! Welware began with good intentions, but they made 3 major mistates:
1. It should have term limits (1 year maybe).
2. You should only be allowed to draw for up to 2 children. If you want to have 15, the rest are on you.
3. All able-bodies should be required to work!
Is it possible to fix it now? I think it would be like trying to put the Genie back into the bottle!

Whether this is “all” true or not, it is a disgrace. my husband and i bust our asses and pay more in taxes each year than some people make! all to feed, cloth, and house people like sharon. It’s a sad world that allows people like her to get paid to stay home and do nothing or to have babies. i think all those being supported completely by us hard working taxpayers, (the women) should be required to receive the (birth control) IUD implant to prevent any births until they have been off of the “system” and are supporting themselves. Once they have held a job for at least 6 months, then the implant can be removed. i’m sick to death of going to work ill or watching my husband drive over an hour each way to go to work, just so lazy ass people can do nothing, but sit at home and bitch. The random drug testing is a great idea, i have to submit to it at random for my job, why shouldn’t they? things need to change, but it sadly won’t, b/c the people who are at home with nothing to do have all the time in the world to go stand in line to vote for the favorite politician who will keep steaks in their freezer, nikes on their feet, and a caddy in the driveway.
The types of programs that allow this type of abuse will continue as long as:
1) People on the program are allowed to vote – (Definition of special intrest)
2) People running for office are out of touch with mainstream America, or self-serving to the point of appealing to the “Sharon’s” of the country.
This is a complex issue / problem and will require a complex solution. We can no more jerk the rug out from under the “Sharon’s” of the country (and their kids / grandkids) than we can just pack up and leave Iraq. However, we need a strategy and program that moves people off of gov’t assistance and into the work force. And truly separates the needy from the lazy.
In order to get benefits you should have to work, whether it’s the benefits of a salary for working for an employer, or the benefits of a gov’t check for picking up trash.
Maybe there is something to be said about ‘debtor’s prisons’…
So, here I am. A hard working american white male. I work 3 jobs. My wife also works full-time. We have two kids, 4 and 1, both in day care. Last year, my wife and I made approximately 50 thousand dollars. We have a modest 1200 square foot home that we have paid less than 40K for, a 2004 automobile and I drive a 1988 automobile. After daycare, car payment, house payment, light bill, water, telephone, insurance, gas driving back and forth to worketc. there ain’t much (if anything) left. Why is it that the folks who don’t do jack get free housing, monthly checks, etc while the folks who are working people who make just enough to make ends meet can’t get a break? Don’t you think I’d LOVE to let the Government make a house payment or pay a light bill or two? I work for a living. My wife works for a living. We, like most hard working Americans, don’t want a hand out from the government, but would LOVE for a little help every now and then. If this money wasn’t being leeched by those who refuse to do the right thing, they might just could do that. It’s time for the Government to kick the folks who refuse to work to the street and FORCE them to get a job. I’m sure there should be some exceptions to the rule… but I get tired of seeing a woman with 5 kids living in free housing driving an Escalade! Anybody with me?!

I happen to live in a small town between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. We all suffered in one way or another from the Hurrican. Some alot worse than others. There were many people that came to our town and towns around us looking for housing and work. They picked up what was left of thier lives and made the best of a bad situation. But there were so many more people like this ungratful woman. It truly made us sick. It opened our eyes to the many many people that live like Sharon. These people will never go away and will never stop taking from the government until the government stops offering to give them everything they need to sit on thier butts reproducing. If the government could do just one thing to stop this terrible fraud I think before a person can get thier check or food stamp card they should have to pee in a cup on the spot in the office they drive thier cadi to pick thier check up at. If they can’t pass a simple drug test then they can’t have anything. I think it would cut down on about half of these Sharons weather they be male, femal, black or white. The cost of doing a drug screen has to be alot less than the drug addicts we support every day. Just one way we could start moving in the right direction.

I too have worked since I was 16 and am now 56 with a husband that is 63. We are still paying to put our youngest daughter through college which is not cheap. No one has given us anything and never will as I refuse to take something from all the hard working taxpayers of this world unlike the sharon in this article. What a bunch of manure, I came from Cuba 40 years ago, and have worked since the age of 11, and I would have to take away money I spend on my two daughters in order to buy a television that size.
But yet, our taxes from our hard earned money paid for hers, this is absolutely the epitome of “Insult to Injury” and lunacy.
I could go on and on with this, and it sure makes me raging mad that the taxes that are collected off of my gross income pay for this individual’s luxury, but yet has hardly ever done anything to earn it, wow what an insult.
This may be tongue in check but not too far from the truth. I’ll never forget the day in the grocery store where the woman in front of me paid for her groceries with food stamps and then proceeded to whip out her “gold” visa card to pay for the items not eligible for purchase with food stamps. I was shocked. How does someone on welfare and food stamps qualify for a gold visa card? I work hard and have since I was 16 years old. I pay taxes and I am sick and tired of my tax dollars supporting people who are able to work just as hard as I do. There are people who truely need assistance and I have no problem with that, but the ones who’s inheritance from their families is lessons on how to bilk the welfare system for all its worth really get me mad!!! Let’s come up with a way for welfare recipients to earn the subsidies they receive. Cleaning highways, community service, provide daycare for the welfare mothers so they can work…..etc, etc.

Donna #95 couldn’t be more right! I have recently become unemployed – and not by choice. My husband works 55+ hours a week driving a truck. I have 3 kids ages 16, 11 and 2. I have a student loan that requires monthly payments of $268. After you add my mortgage, car payment, utilities, and everyday essentials for a family of 5, I have nothing left. Yet, I cannot get any assistance from anywhere. Why? Because I am white.
I understand that the above article is satire. But it has an underlying truth. Way too many people abuse welfare. I agree that some people do NEED it to get by, but it is not a long-term solution to hard times.
I believe that if you are an able bodied person, then you should be working for a living. No excuses. I don’t see the greeters at Wal-Mart complaining. Most of them are handicapped! Yet they are happy to have a job and they do it willingly.
I hate standing in line at the grocery store and watching perfectly healthy people getting tons of food and unecessary items for free by using a link card or food stamps or WIC. It’s not right. I pinch my pennies and buy generic everything so that I stay within my budget and make sure that my gas bill gets paid. These people have cell phones, manicures, expensive weaves, and designer shoes. I have jeans and a sweatshirt from K-Mart. My purse cost me $12.95. My no name tennis shoes from Payless have a rip in the seam. And my hair and nails – all natural!
As if the lazy people who were born here aren’t enough of a drain on our society, what do we do? We allow foreigners to come into our country and get grants to open up their own businesses so that the American mom and pop stores are forced to close. I would love to open up my own business – I don’t even care what it is – just as long as it is my own and I could make a decent living. But, I cannot do any such thing simply because I was born in this country. I am white at that is a severe disadvantage.
We need a major overhaul in our government and of the people who decided that giving the hard working American tax dollars to lazy welfare scum and foreigners was a good idea. Common sense has completely gone out the window!
As the name says, I am neither Black or white. I am what the blacks call a half-breed (American of Native descent). Notice I said AMERICAN. As some one who lives in New Orleans and has lived here my entire life, let me set the record straight for those of you who think this is just to strange to be true. Let’s just say, the person (Sharon) is for real. For us poor saps that work everyday we were treated to this display of greed and a lot more adjectives (of course I cannot, because if you are not black you cannot have an opinion or be upset, if you do you are? That’s right a racist). I have live here all of my life and believe me there are more Sharon’s out there (in New Orleans) than any of you could possibly phanthom. She was the featured story on the local news when the public (taxpayers) housing debate was going on here. The comments attributed to her, were stated by her, and she was truly appaled that she would now have to pay utilities in this new place. She was also distrubed that she was upgraded to a better place. She could not understand why people did not agree with her that she was entitled to wooden floors, big screen t.v. and any other luxury she should want. I was raised by a single mother who had 6 children and believe me when I tell you our skin color was not the right shade to get any assistance. We were raised to work for whatever we needed or wanted. We were never taught that someone else owes us a place to live, furniture, designer clothes, automobiles, and the right to eat like a king. My husband and I both work every day, pay for health insurance, high fuel cost to commute from home to the job, and I do not believe there is are has ever been a program for me. As someone, who as one of the others stated earlier, had to have (not want) some help for my 2 children. I received food stamps for 6 months until I could find a job. I hope you guys are all ready for this tidbit – I was a single mother (my ex left for California) and refused to re-qualify for assistance, the government wanted the 6 months back. I refused to pay because during my marriage I felt we had paid enough taxes to provide many meals for others on the system, so 5 years later when I remarried and filed a joint tax return, you guessed it, they took the money back. Now, I would be willing to bet good working money on the fact that in the 13 years of marriage to my first husband we definately paid more that 1,200 in taxes that went to a whole lot of Sharons. I shall stop for now because I get so very up set. Trust me between the illegals and the abusers it is very stressful. I do vote, I do work, I do believe that all able bodied people should not be living off of anyone expecially the people that struggle every day.
Having lived in NO for the last 10 years and watching the debate of how much welfare our crippled city can support, I don’t want the ratio to go back to what it was pre-Katrina. It was an unsustainable situation. People here are just clans, they can’t leave their other welfare clan members. It’s weird to me how they are so attached to one another. I am Black. I worked since I was 15 years old. I am now retired. I know some people living in section 8 housing, but not in Louisiana. They have no where near a place as nice as this lady. They don’t expect to get a place anywhere near this nice. They are grateful for what they get. They are not leaches and they are not ‘working the system’.
One is paralyzed on her left side and cannot walk or stand. She is also trying to get physical therapy so she can learn to work with the ability she has left. So far the system says no. She thinks that if she could do something with her left side she could, with help, get a job. Staying home isn’t what she wants to do. She pays 50% of her rent from her disability check and section 8 pays the rest.
Another is a man that is not mentally able to hold a job or take care of himself. He lives in public housing with 2 others that help him to cope with life everyday.
Just because a small minority are abusing the system, don’t throw out the baby with the bath water. Change the system so it helps those that truly need it and put the others in mandatory jobs that allow them to pay for some or all of what they get.
Pray for people who are this stupid and lazy!!! I am proud of the fact that I have worked very hard for everything I have and I would not ..repeat would NOT live off of others the way these PEOPLE DO!!!!!You just can not DO enough for stupid lazy people!!
Hey!!! For anyone interested….I live in New Orleans part-time and SAW the original story in New Orleans that the above piece IS based on. The top picture of Ms. Jasper in her lliving room and kitchen with giant screen TV, new appliances, wood floors, etc. IS real, as are many of the quotes in the above satire.
The wine celler and giant bath are spoof photos to expand upon Mr. Jasper’s actual complaints about how bad she has it living on public assistance.
But she IS an actual person and this was an actual news story in mid 2007 in the New Orleans Times-Picyune daily paper. It also drew a ton of outrage in the City, as you can imagine because Mr. Jasper DID have the audacity to show up as part of a protest in the chambers of City Hall to gripe about how horrible the Section 8 freebies are.
This is to Dot in # 257……… you are wonderful!!!!! There are people of all colors who truly do need the help; your friends who are disabled are a prime example.
Everyone seems to make this out to be a racial issue. Come on people. I just happen to be caucasion, but when I sit down at my local DFCS office for one of the many mandatory appointments I have (to keep food in my kids mouths, keep them in daycare so I can work, and keep their medicaid) there are just as many “white” folks there as “black” ones. And yes, those white folks have 3,4 or 5 kids. They won’t work because the cost of everything is too much and they get more money staying home.

I am not a Bush apologist, but he did inherit a recession from Clinton, and the tax cuts did get us out of the recession. Of course the stupid spending (welfare included) is another issue all together. But tax cuts at the top are the only way to stimulate the economy, create jobs and put money in the middle class’s hands. The tax rebates going out in early summer will not. It has to come from the top. Ask yourself how many people received jobs from poor people? None. Jobs come from corporations that have the money to pay them, and the more money they have the more jobs they have. Below is a funny but accurate depiction of how our tax system works.

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.

They are the ones allowing all this illegal immigration, the selling out of our jobs with NAFTA, and the continual erosion of the american way of life. My father was the first to graduate from highschool. I was the first to graduate from college. We are as normal as any white people and we live in a good suburbian home.
I never asked the man for a dime. I could have gone to MSU free, simply because of my color. I refused to lower my standards to that of a common begger. I paid my own way thru college, and just recently finished paying off 50 thousand in student loan fees. Now I can build my life for my wife and our first child that is expected in May of this year.

Just for the record, I realize that this is satire, yet out of all the outlandish pictures in the article one is real. The picture of her with the ‘big screen’ TV.
I used to own and rent Section 8 housing, we got out of it because of the condition out houses ended up in after being rented for only 1 year.
We had 10 Section 8 homes, we bought them, brought them up to code, which averaged about $15,000 per home. Within a single year we had to evict each and every tennet because of damages they inflicted to their residence!
When it came time to fix everything, after the fiasco of trying to get them out, we averaged $19,000 to repair everything that was broke, and this was just to bring them back to the original renovated condition!
It’s not just her, or a single race, we had many ethnicities in our homes, they all treated with contempt. We weren’t slum lords either, the houses were of different sizes etc, but I would have lived in any one of them myself. In fact after evicting the last section 8 renter, I moved into one and lived there for 6 years having 2 children in the mean time.
The problem is with the system of providing for others who don’t want to provide for themselves. I firmly believe that unless you cannot (due to physical disability) work, then you ‘don’t eat.’ No free lunch. The whole system is backwards!
I love the comments. I work for a HUD contractor for foreclosed homes and you would not believe what YOUR money has paid for with these Katrina “victims”. Homes, utilities, furniture and so on. New appliances that they’ve sold. Most of them went back to New Orleans 2 years ago and are renting out the HUD homes and making money, which is strictly against the contract. We joke around here about the “Golden Ticket” they were given. Most threaten our inspectors and won’t let them in the homes. Some of the places have been totally trashed. It is completely unbelievable! They are now being told by HUD they will have to make other arraingments and they have told us these are their homes and they are not leaving! Even if they don’t even live there anymore.

Think about it: Why would they care to keep their houses clean? They’re not working for it, it’s not their house. They could care less – it’s YOURS. My point is, those people have no self respect. They’ve never had to work for anything because it’s always been given to them. They are like horrible spoiled children who are used to having everything handed to them. When you work, you take great pride in what that money buys and you take large measures to protect what your hard work has provided. If you never work, you never care about anything except how to get your next free handout.

My job was out sourced to India last August. Maybe she will rent me a room ? I’m unemployed but that shouldn’t bother her any from the looks of things there and the sound of the “woe is me ” noises she is making. I lost my apt. Moved in with a friend of a friend of mine. The hot water was turned on once a week for bathing.When friends came over to smoke pot I thought if I closed my door I’d be safe. When I found out it was being sold from there I moved out. My Daughter and her family were nice enough to take me in. Now they are losing thier house to forclosure.We would kill for a nice place like Sharon is sitting her fat lazy ass in ! Sharon needs to get a life then get a job like the rest of us !!!!

I have 5 children ages 13 years to 5 months. I was terminated from my job 3 days after I had my son. My husband works his butt off and we still can’t get ahead. When I tried to file for assistance I was told my husband makes too much money.
We are stressed from one month to the next trying to make ends meet and I read this to find that someone who does not even deserve assitance gets it hands down.

I think that if they have one kid and are on welfare then have another instead of giving them more take that child at birth if they cant take care of the first we should not give them more and when they go for food stamps we need to take there gold chains to pay for it. My husband grew up in the Caribbean and went to college in St. Thomas. He was offered a full scholarship from a good college in the U. S. until they found out he was white! He had the grades, was an honor student which should have been what the scholarship was based on, but because he was from the Caribbean, they believed he was black. His professor was and he was absolutely furious that they refused the scholarship after they realized he was white. Discrimination??
I have worked my entire life to get hardwood floors and have a place to call my own. I drive by everyday the results of Welfare living and third and fourth generations. My point is maybe Katrina can work herself up again and do another 23 billion in improvements to places like where Sharon and her family live. I am not surprised at the attitude of this woman, this is the type of attitude I encounter all the time by people in her position, on Section 8 and still not grateful for what they have. Most people are a check away from being homeless but oh no she deserves better. My tax money bought her that 60″ TV she is complaining about…can I get the TV since she doesn’t want it. And if she can do better living in a tent why hasn’t she moved and let someone who will appreciate her apartment move into it.

I didn’t know section 8 has existed as long as the story says. I am 53 years old and white. My father was killed in an auto accident when I was 2 1/2 years old and my mom was pregnant with by brother.
My mother’s family was share croppers and, to my knowledge, never was on anykind of welfare . My mother, oldest of four, got only as far as the sith grade for an education.
After my father died, she did get some sort of a small social security check but had to find a job to make ends meet and feed me and my brother.
To make a very long story short, I remember living in a very small rent house until I was in the fifth grade and moving to another school district, a home slightly larger, and during all that time, amidst all the bill collector phone calls, never did she ever once go on welfare or food stamps.
There is no excuse for Sharon, and most of all there is no excuse why we keep voting in legislative oficials that have built this system and mess we, and Sharon, are in.
My mother taught me a lot about pride. There have been a couple of times I could have taken unemployment and did not. I now own my own business and know just what a senseless tax the employer, and the working class pay to help people like Sharon who have the abiltity to work and stand on their own two feet.
THis country is in a big mess taking care of people who don’t want to contribute, still taking on more over our borders, and not having the guts to force them to work and contibute to the good of the whole.

Well after reading the vast majority of the comments, I seriously debated on whether or not to state my opinion. It’s exactly that, my opinion. First, this obviously isn’t a racial issue as evidenced by the varying comments. Secondly, its not a political issue either, because if it was the self righteous Republicans would have turned the situation around years ago. So who really gains from this? The Section 8 Landlords, apparently not, after listening to the personal account of one landlord. The minions at the welfare office that are state employees? It’s surely not all of the hard working tax payers. It’s obviously the Sharon Jaspers and that clown Jeffrey Ryan. So how do we dismantle an obviously broken system? This is tongue in cheek, but, back in the old days when the adultress was discovered they painted a scarlet A on the door. Maybe we need to paint a big green 8 on the section eighters homes, so that the crack heads know where to steal the 60″ plasma TV’s and fine whine (pun intended). Maybe a little ostracizing from their neighbors could shame their lame asses into some work. I do know a section 8er thats a widow and her son is a bigger leech on society than his mother could ever be. He continually goes to her for his cigarette and booze money, and she’s finally gotten to the point where she won’t let him in her apartment. #281 Ken thinks a war on the section eighters (actually he wasn’t targeting just them) is the answer, Ken did you have a bounty dollar value in mind? Saving the government all that money has to be worth something. In all honesty we do have a situation out of control, I’m a Vietnam Veteran and I know of individuals that claim to be suffering from PTSD. They aren’t suffering from PTSD, they’re suffering from laziness like Sharon and Jeffrey. They are just one more example of the abuses going on in this country. Now we have another unfortunate war, that will also provide its fair share of PTSD wannabees. I know that I’ve never seen a definitive listing of Section 8ers by state, or for that matter PTSDers. If the American public knew exactly what was given away by all the administrations to just Americans, immigrants and illegals we would all be raising hell. Then we have the other giveaway programs like corporate welfare and the money we ship off to every other country on the planet. One of our forefathers Thomas Hamilton stated that “no subsequent generation should have to pay the debt of a previous generation”, and look at what we are doing to our children. I 62 and have been disabled since 1997! I waited 2 long years to be able to live in a half decent house for a reasonable amout of rent! I drive a 97 Chevy Malibu and get a whopping $1035..per month from SSDI!
Since I make such a large amount of money and thanks to the idiot Bush…I can’t get food stamps so I have to choose between paying the lights water,gas and my meds with not jack chit left over!!!

Unfortunately, this is not a joke as some have said throughout this forum. It sounds to unbelieveable to be true, but true it is. The true picture is the one showing her with the big screen tv. The truth is her calling out Shut Up White Boy. The truth is that she doesn’t work, but rather lives from the sweat of our labor. And, she has no shame. I believe in karma, and I would not want to be Sharon when it’s “pay up” time.
To number 48, I would like to just state that this is a terrible story and rather sad. There are many welfare recips out there that do misuse the system, obviously like this Sharon person. However, please do not lump all people who receive assistance into one category. Keep in mind that some people who receive these benefits find it easier to stay on assistance because getting off proves rather difficult to maintain bills, food, electric bills etc. But on the other hand someone said that if we retrain them and give them “X” amount of time to get out of the system it could prove to reduce costs. But they have to be able to go into a job that would allow them money to maintain at least a reduced cost of living. I am in no means justifying this person’s actions rather just clarifying that not all welfare people abuse the system. And yes most do we see it all the time.
I know in NY (upstate) it is very hard to get on welfare, and if you are accepted for assistance you have to join a work assistance program. You have to go to the welfare office daily and work on building skills to find a job. They retrain you so that you can earn a paycheck.
I don’t want to loose site that this is a woman who obviously has a skewed perception on life and believes that what she gets she deserves and much more… She is a sad woman. But people have to bare in mind to watch their tongues and not be as ignorant as the people who misuse our hard working tax dollars.
Many comments have been made about racism, yes we get it she seems to be rather racist, but i think we all still need not to loose track of what the story is really trying to tell us. I am a Real Estate appraiser and have been in plenty of section 8 houses. There was one house in particular that was vacant when I inspected it. The owner was there to let me in. The owner told me thay the previous tenent paid $3 whole dollars a month in rent and never had the money, however, she did drive a Ford Navigator.
How absurd! People like Sharon should be kicked out on thier a**, told to get a job, and quit whining. I am married with one child. Most people would say that we make a pretty decent amount of money, but we can’t afford hard wood floors, or a new 60″ TV. We have been scrimping and cutting corners just to put any money away so that maybe in a few years we can buy a real house. We’ve never been on welfare or any other kind of government assistance. Maybe I should pop out a few more kids and have my spouse collect unemployment so we can get a new Tv, hard wood floors, free cars, free food, free housing, and whatever else we could possibly ever want! My wife was walked out on at age 18, left with a child too raise on her own! The creep who walked out made sure she got pregnant so he could skip draft for Vietnam. He also skipped out on child support. With only a 10th grade education this left her to support and raise son alone. She was rejected back then (1974) by welfare because she wasn’t black or minority, just a poor little white girl. Poor little white girl did everything she legally could to support herself and child! From washing dishes, pumping ice cream, cleaning dirty toilets, cleaning elderly peoples butts and working 18 hr. days. Back then she had two pairs of shoes (1pr. work, 1pr. home) 4 pair of jeans, few shirts. Get the picture, she did with out! When I met her she accomplished having her own home, nice 40l k, and new car! So what’s Sharon’s excuse other than being a lazy, selfish, unappreciative, lard butt user and abuser of others! Any able-bodied person should be working, no excuses! Welfare is for those who can’t work due to health issues (themselves or ill children). Social Security was earned by all workers who paid in benifits for when they retired, or became disabled through no fault of their own. If you don’t honestly fit either category, then you’re a leach, feeding off the rest of us. Sharon and all others looking for a free ride should be unloaded from the system. And lazy cry baby blacks should quit whining about what the white man owes them. You could have been left back in Africa where conditions are so much worse and welfare doesn’t exist! Ok…I work at a law firm where I see this kind of thing all the time. There was a young girl we tried to help where she was given several things in a Will but needed to get the will published before these things could be handled.. She was 18…She refused to pay any money and acted like we owed her… we know her aunt well (who always pays her bill) she tried to help the girl get a job (had a job lined up for her)…the girl refused and said she never wanted to work but just wanted a government check for the rest of her life. How sad…

I do have EBT assistance, but it is because I have 3 children and am in school 5 days a week to better my family and work the other 2 days, but I can say when I graduate I will not have assistance anymore. That’s because like most government programs, it’s an either/or eligibility. There is no sliding scale, wherein if you earn a buck legitimately you get to keep most of that buck. Instead, if you earn a buck, you risk forfeiting the whole deal.

Going by what I’ve been reading here, start seething and foaming at the mouth my friends, cause “you ain’t seen nothin’ yet”!!! And why is it that every time many of you (most?) make a comment about “color” it is prefaced with “I’m not a racist”? Well said, BrownLA! You speak for a great many people. Our Founding Fathers would be united in their opposition to the welfare state of today. This they never envisioned. This they never intended. The “Sharons” in our country are the proof in the pudding that our present welfare state is BANKRUPT in three ways: socially, spiritually, and financially. Simply put: the liberal do-gooders (via the government) slowed edged the churches out of the way by financially supporting the downtrodden which caused many of our social and financial problems. Our country MUST return to the policy of “If you don’t work, you don’t eat.” Welfarism was once the responsibility of our churches. It should be again. The people must get their government out of the business of “caring” for the “downtrodden” from cradle-to-grave and return that social responsibility to our churches. Only THEN will attitudes and behaviors change. Plus, it will do wonders for the deficit, not to mention the general economy of our country.
I really thought this was a joke- At the age of 20 (i’m now 38) I had a severely disabled son- Mind you, i had a 40k a year job before he was born and lost it shortly after because he needed my undevided attention- I paid my Cobra co-pay out of the unemployment I received, and bought his diapers and formula- I took a much lesser paying job once my unemployment ran out and still NEVER went on Welfare or applied for housing because I knew there were truly people out there that didn’t have the ability to work like I did- Once he was 2 yrs old, i ran into some really hard times- lost another job, etc and I swallowed my pride and applied for food stamps and cash assistance- After 6 months of going grocery shopping at midnight (because I was so embarrased and ashamed) I got another job and dropped all my assistance- I now am gratefully blessed to be where i am- Worked many hours without much sleep and now run a business with my other 1/2- A car business- Well ,let me give you another kicker- There is a program that in which the good old state of PA allows people on welfare to obtain training to get a job- Great isn’t it????? Not quite- We the taxpayers, pay $2200 for these welfare recipients to get a car WITHOUT first obtaining a job and an additional $400 if that car needs repairs while they and everyone in there family is driving around NOT looking for a job- We pay there first 6 month of insurance and one free year of AAA in case that car that should be getting them to work in breaks down (usually on the way to New York where they like to visit friends and family) Not only do I see some of the most unappreciative people with this progarm, but we, the taxpayers pay for this by busting our asses 40- 60 hrs a week, pay our own mortgage, and utility bills, buy our own TV’s and holy crap don’t even qualify for low cost health insurance for our kids or a program for low cost heating oil- I lost my disabled son’s SSI because I claimed 33,000 last year- Also included was the 24k i had in out of pocket medical expenses because I don’t even allow the state insurance he has to supply diapers for him- WHere is the logic in this country????? Give me a break! We had your supposed “conservative” ex-Governor (of Texas) Bush in charge, WITH a GOP congress for a good while, and he/they did nothing to stop this, so don’t blame it on the liberals. I have several leaky faucets and a 32″ TV but I can’t fix the leaks or buy a new TV because I’m having to support stupid racist people that think everything is owed them. Live like the people that support you and then you will have a right to complain. Get a job and shut up.

I have worked in gov. public housing in Oklahoma and I have even had the honor of going on apartment inspections in government subsidized apartments. I have taken tenant’s complaints and I worked to make sure the millions of dollars that was given to the state of Oklahoma for sec. 8 tenants was given in the correct amounts to the landlords. Thats right MILLIONS a month.
The tenants are just like this lady. Some of the tenants had nicer furnichure, clothing, and tv’s than I had. Their kids had nicer clothing, their kids had nicer beds, bedding, and even had nicer toys and bikes and motorbikes. They had nicer washers and dryers. I reviewed files and saw how easy it was for them to lie about income, but I was told there was nothing I could do to prove it. Many of them never worked and once they did work and saw that their rent was raised b/c of it they’d quite working.
People would live in public housing all their lives and once their kids were of age they’d move into the apartment next door for free and take another apartment for free. Many of them receiving a check reimbursement each month for utilities. We had to inspect the apartments to make sure that the landlords maintained very high standards, in fact higher standards than homes I’ve had the pleasure of renting in my life (homes with very high rents).
Many of them had complaints just like Sharon Jasper. Even if the story is not true, believe me their are millions of people out there just like her! I know from experience.
It’s just pathetic. Our elected government officials just don’t have the balls to fix this issue. I am a landlord that rents to Section 8 tenants. I have seen their homes filthy dirty, children ignored, parents split, etc….. But they always seem to have money for new clothes, painted fingers and toes, gas, babysitters, tattoos, bling, booze, drugs, and a party life style.
And BrownLA is right, this is not necessarily a race/color issue, it is a life style choice that is perpetuated and passed to the next generation. Here in Omaha, we have a pretty diverse population (White, Black, Hispanic, Samoan, American Indian, Eastern Indian, and more). And every race has its’ share of pathetic folks with their hands out all the time.
However, here in Omaha, the statistics prove that Blacks and Hispanics are the majority of folks receiving government assistance. The kicker is, Omaha has a strong and vibrant economy, even considering the downturn. They have statistics that show our Black community as one of the poorest in the nation. However, as I mentioned above, I rent housing to these folks and I see a different story completely. The inside of their homes resembles our friend Sharon (in the story). Go figure?
The truth is, they have plenty of money. It’s just not in the form we expect. It is CASH. COLD HARD CASH. It’s found all over the place when you live as a criminal / gangsta / brother / cracker / or what ever you want to call it. In the end, it is simply CRIME and our leaders have no balls to combat the issues.
Step up Mr Obama and end this mess. Folks that abuse the system and choose this lifestyle should be locked up.
20 years ago I accepted help from the county for my newborn son. It was so demeaning I decided there was a better way. College. Hard as it was, I did it. I am an RN. I work in Milwaukee Wisconsin in a large medical facility. In 2009 it amazes me that I am still surrounded by Sharons of the world. Its a give me and what do you owe me because Im black attitude that makes me sick. All of the subsidies are still alive and well. The work ethic is still beyond poor. If the criteria for the job isnt met then I am sitting in human rsources because I am being accused of racism. I however have to listen to comments from these blacks I work with that are hushed because everyone is afraid to confront the real issue, reverse racism. If I addressed anyone as “black girl” or said shut up, I would be in serious trouble. I however have to hear it all of the time. Generation after generation learns how to work the system and therefore the system must change. The Sharons of the world need to get a swift kick in the ass and have the lifeline cut. In healthcare we have taken welfare to work programs and put the people who didnt want to be in the workforce in the first place into nursing assistant programs because of need. Every day I see the same people neglecting and abusing our elderly because “I aint finnin to be doing this”. This meaning anything more than to get by! The attitude of “Im here doing yall a favor” is sickening. I hope I see a solution in my lifetime because the life Ive seen with the Sharons of the world is not pretty. Theses people need to see what its like to work and struggle. Maybe in another country without welfare systems. A system that you work and earn or forage for the food it takes to feed your family. Maybe the country of origin should welcome Sharon back (100+ years later) and give her what she deserves. Maybe a deportation of sorts!
Why do we pay for anything for this woman? She says straight up she won’t work. She doesn’t even what her kids to have to work. If you get a leach on your body you pull it off and kill it. She’s a leach on your wallet and whe breeds. Unbeleavable we let this happen.

As I explained to my two high school daughter, who wanted to know why we don’t get them a car like the majority of black kids have at school. Walmart shopping right after proved and pushed home the point. Black woman, 2 shopping carts, well dressed, all name brand food, steaks and roast (more than 1 package) cookies, chips, and on. In checkout line ahead of us with one cart, all good value brands, and roll of prepackaged hamburger meat. Her bill totaled up to $637.87, I never forget her cost, she whips out her green card (EBT-Food Stamps) she swipes it, total now comes up as $24.43 she owes. She pays and leaves. Now our turn 1 cart total $241.21 and I pay $241.21. I leave with $241 in groceries, and $241 less money,. she leaves with $637 in groceries and only cost her $24 so she has, as I explained to my two girls, $600.00 that did not come out of her pocket, but ours. So now I run the gamut of money between those people and us. Section 8 housing ( $600 rent for $100 or less) Money per each kid at the house, welfare, medical paid, Reduced rent, reduced electricity, phone, internet……ok maybe not internet. So I spend our money, they spend our money, and they still have disposable cash to buy big tv’s, cars, gas, 4 wheeler. tractors, go karts for the kids, cell phones, and other goodies. This is prevalent around my neighborhood as we live in and amongst them and we see it everyday, as they hang out around the local black store and front yards all day long. So yeah I’m pissed, and they want to be called africans ——– Then go back. I’ve also known white trash who do the same, but are the minority of the welfare state
I think we should help the poor–everyone deserves to be helped. But, it should be for a limited time with the understanding that they will go to school to learn a trade and go to work. If at the end of that time, you say, will we kick them to the curb to fend for themselves if they won’t work? Well, I am too goodhearted to say that, but I think we should bring back the Poor Farms, Communes, or something similar, where if they can’t (or won’t) work, they can work in gardens, feed the cows, milk the cows or whatever to support themselves and others in the same situation. At least it will give them pride that they are contributing.
P.S. I am 57 years old and was brought up working..as children we rode on the cotton sacks of mom and dad out in the cotton fields of Arizona, when we got old enough they put us with a tiny burlap sack and taught to pick the cotton, and then when we were even older, they expected us to work right along side of them, picking as much cotton as they did. In spring we thinned cotton plants, in summer we weeded cotton, and in fall we picked the cotton. In winter we went to the green onions field, pulled and wrapped bunches of green onions. While in school we didn’t get free lunches…at first we took a jelly sandwich each every day for lunch. When we got in jr. high, we were privileged to work in the school cafeteria in exchange for a hot lunch, which by the way, we didn’t complain about the food…it was good and we appreciated it. I wore a net over my hear and helped put food on plates, washed down tables, or anything that was asked of me. I think the world was ruined when they passed laws that children could no longer work in agriculture fields…it was a good summer job and earned many a child nice school clothes. Now children are left to stay home by themselves while their parents work, and because they are bored they roam the streets and/or get into trouble. It is very sad to see what our American has become. We have created a population who is selfish and greedy and wants things handed to them.

Actually Snopes gave it a mixed status and I disagree with the reasons why. They said because all of what was said was not said in the interview but some was said in the meeting. It should have been given a untainted “true” status. Unfortunately there are a lot of blacks that fall into this mind set. They do not seem to realize that the activists, religious leaders and the politicians are USING them when they feed them this bull. Sharons plight, is regarded by some as unfortuante and by some who think it is nothing but satire. It is both, the original story did have some satire in it with accompanying pictures of luxurious rooms and appointments. The dining, bath, and wine cellar were the starical part. Tjhe big screen TV and hardwood floors as well as the apparent ’sufficiently nice’ kitchen are genuine.
The incident of her shouting during the city council meeting is also true. In short, attempting to help some people with their plight can be very unrewarding if the individual is as ignorant as this ‘throwback’ to our ape days is proving. Where is non-consenting ethuanisa when one needs it.

Oh I apologize, as for work why do aplications ask for your ethnicity. Does it really mater? If you are qualified for the job than you should be hired gender should also not be included. Hire the person who is qualified. One more thing if I am required to take a drug test as an active duty member why shouldnt people on welfare be required to so the same? A drug test cost at the most 300 hundred dollars which will create more jobs because somebody has to collect the sample and somebody has to test it. Oh I would just like to add one more thing. I AM a product of the welfare system. I have three brothers and when we were younger my mother and father raised us USING the welfare system. My father worked and my mother raised us until she could work. As soon as they could, they came off the welfare system. This is how the system is supposed to work. My parents told me they felt ashamed to take a handout(Thats what welfare is). because they were raised basically the strong survive and being average is never acceptable. When did hard work will get you somewhere fall at the waste or to strive better? So before you judge me let me say that your skin color doesnt matter. Our system lets those that are weak get ahead.

I have worked since I was 15, Im black, graduated from H.S., have kids,still working (full-time) and yes Im on section-8 housing(working on owning a house). I needed some help. Just to let some people know that everyone on Section-8, don’t sit on their butts(like Sharon-if true). I work hard like everyone else while working with Section-8 counselors for homeownership. Section-8 is not a bad thing, they do help you acheive your goals with setting a budget, home-ownership counseling and finally home-ownership.
Sharon needs a reality check to see what it feels like to really need but have to work for it.

This makes me sick!!!! I am 46 years old. Worked since i was 13. When i was divorced with a young child I needed surgery for cervical cancer. I had a a job but it payed $4.45 a hour. I could not afford insurance. So i signed up for Medicaid, and for 3 months I received medicaid and food stamps. I had my surgery and went back to work and off medicaid. I was so ashamed to use the food stamps that I went to another town to shop. Then in 2000 when times were bad I was out of work and my husbands work went down to 3 days a week. We applied for food stamps again when we were at the brink of starving. We received $265.00 a month for 6 months. By then his work was picking up. I never went for my appointment to reapply. Because we were able to manage. And shortly after I went back to work.
In feb. I was layed off from my job. It has been hard on us but we are managing to survive so far.
My mother was a wonderful woman. She raised my 2 sisters, my brother and me as a single parent working in a factory. We didnt have alot but we had enough. She always told us kids that WELFARE begets WELFARE. I grew up very poor. No running water cause she could not aford $400.00 to hook up to city water. But we were clean, we had clean clothes, our house was clean. But we hauled alot of water to do that.
I do not have alot now, but what I have is mine and my husbands. We have worked hard and I can say we own our little peice of america free and clear. But it took many years of sweat and tears…. And I have my pride that we did that without money from all of the people out there busting their butts and paying taxes to keep up sorry people like Sharon.
And yes this is not only black people living off of the system. White people do it too. The problem of the professional welfare people has been going-on for generations and will continue to drain our pockets for quite a while. Who is to blame? Well, everyone has their opinion: the Liberals, the Protestants, White Collar America, the Demacrats, Republicans, the Catholics, etc, etc. It’s really easy to point fingers, right? People like this make me SICK. I have worked hard all my life and I sure can’t afford a new TV. Every bit of furniture in my house is hand me downs except for my bed. My ceiling is coming apart, I have a water leak under my house and it’s causing sink spots in my flooring in my kitchen, bathroom and one bedroom. I paid for sitters when my kids were young and they didn’t have designer stuff. Yeah, give the POOR LAZY JERK welfare and FLATSCREEN TV’S and make honest hard working people of all races PAY for these lazy creeps. Good old USA. This is disgusting. As a black woman i am embarrassed for her! I was born in Zambia and i have seen real poverty, i have seen people who really needed help. There are many people like her out there and it really disgusts me to see that people who actually get up and go to work, cannot have assistance and those who just don’t feel like working don’t have to. This makes no sense to me. I understand that they’re thinking that if they get a job they wont get help but it is your responsibility as a human being to work for what you want. The rest of us do. I have also met a few white families who also do the same but the majority of the people who do this are black. It makes me sad to see that after all the trials we’ve been through in history, and the somewhat independence we were given, we still chose to be dependent. Laziness is a serious illness! I hate to see people like that! I cannot believe the designer clothes and shoes, and nice cars they are able to have when a grad student like me who studies and works hard can barely get any help!…I wouldn’t think of applying for benefits unless i really needed them and i don’t see how people like her have no shame! There are people who really need those benefits but unfortunately the majority of the benefits go to the undeserving!
This is so real..the government rewards f-ups… one of my neighbors is 37 years old… lives with her elderly parents who in fact still work… she has never worked a day in her life and has 2 children and every 1st of the month she is out getting high with all her welfare check and is broke by the 2nd of the month…It makes me sick…that I am a working mother of 2 and I cannot get any assistance with child care.. because im not in the brackets to “qualify” but these welfare people have all the benifits they can get…SO Sick.!!!!!!!!! They should drug test them!!!
